Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angel Turner. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angel, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
One strategy I have found helpful in these situations is to focus on my skills and abilities. Instead of feeling self-conscious about my appearance, I remind myself of the unique experiences and perspectives that I bring to the table. By focusing on what I have to offer, rather than what sets me apart, I am able to approach challenges with confidence and resilience.
Another important aspect of being successful in these situations is to build relationships with others in the room. Building relationships also helps me to feel more comfortable and accepted in unfamiliar environments.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Nanna’s Country Cakes® is more than just a brand; it is a celebration of international cuisine and the stories that each dish tells. The foundation of Nanna’s Country Cakes® lies in the idea that food is not only about taste but also about culture and heritage. Every recipe is a narrative that reflects the land, traditions, and people from which it originates. Through the art of cooking, this platform allows diverse cultures to connect and share their unique culinary practices with the world.
Culinary art is a crucial medium through which stories of different communities are told. Each ingredient and cooking technique carries with it a history and a significance that is deeply rooted in cultural identity. For example, baking traditional cakes from various regions can reveal the local customs, celebrations, and even historical events of a particular culture. Nanna’s Country Cakes embraces this concept by showcasing recipes that are passed down through generations, preserving the essence of each culture while allowing it to evolve in a modern context.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, there are three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have had the most significant impact on my growth and success. For those who are early in their own journeys, I have some valuable insights on how to develop and improve upon these qualities.
The first quality that has been instrumental in my journey is resilience. Life is full of challenges and setbacks, and being able to bounce back from those difficult times is essential for personal growth. Developing resilience requires a strong sense of self-belief, perseverance, and the ability to adapt to change. To improve on this quality, I would encourage early journeyers to cultivate a positive mindset, practice self-care, and seek support from friends and family when needed. Building resilience takes time and effort, but it is worth it in the long run.
The second skill that has been crucial in my journey is communication. Effective communication is essential in both personal and professional relationships. Being able to articulate thoughts and ideas clearly, listen actively, and empathize with others are all important aspects of communication. To improve on this skill, I would encourage early journeyers to practice active listening, seek feedback from others, and work on their non-verbal communication skills. Good communication can help foster stronger relationships and open up new opportunities in life.
The third area of knowledge that has had a significant impact on my journey is emotional intelligence. Understanding and managing emotions is key to building healthy relationships, making informed decisions, and achieving personal success. Emotional intelligence involves self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills. To develop emotional intelligence, I would encourage early journeyers to practice mindfulness, reflect on their emotions, and seek feedback from others on how they handle challenging situations. Strengthening emotional intelligence can lead to better self-control, improved communication, and greater overall well-being.
