We recently connected with Angela Bauter and have shared our conversation below.
Angela, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Coming from someone who was not always optimistic in my younger years – It is a choice! Growing up, getting older, you see hard things happen to people you know and love, and you have hard things happen to you. Of course you can say, well, good things will happen too at some point in the future. But it isn’t just about treading, banking on things getting better. It’s about deciding how you want to handle the hardships. How you can help others dealing with hardships. Take steps in the right direction. We can all choose how we want to impact the world – if we give positivity and try add something nice to someone’s day, well, the world becomes a better place with each small act. You also have to remember to be kind to yourself – it’s hard to be positive if you are dwelling on past mistakes. Decide today that you are going to move forward with positivity.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Like many artistic types, I didn’t really believe in myself when I was younger, but my sister did. She encouraged me to put some work out there. Well, if I was going to do it, I would do it right. At 20 I decided on a product, set up a website, get my business registered with the state and decided to see where it went. It has been nearly 2 decades now! I do graphic design and printing with a specialty of wedding save the date magnets & invitations. Over the years though, customers have had me work on all sorts of interesting projects. The best part about my business is in fact my customers. I love working with different people and making something special for them.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three good qualities to have if you are planning to start a business are:
Positivity – You can’t take risks & put yourself out there without some hope and belief in yourself.
Pragmatism – But you also shouldn’t take risks just for fun. Don’t extend yourself to the point where you can’t pivot when needed.
Adaptability – Things are going to change, no matter what kind of business you are in. Keep an open mind to new tools and new ways of communication.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When you are overwhelmed, seriously get some sleep. Our brains need sleep to process – you may find a better path forward the next day that you never would have thought of if you just kept pushing yourself. After sleeping, write out a list of things you need to do, organize it, and tackle them one by one.
