We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angela Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
I was rather fortunate to be raised by Midwestern Boomers that didn’t suffer fools. In some ways, that meant I was quite alone and left to my own (and at times feral) devices, but I was also granted a blessing to explore and develop my independence rather early in life. It was a never about what someone else thought of you because no one else’s opinion of you should matter more than your own. And that your only real competition is yourself. I honestly believe this is why it was such a simple decision for me to research, create and establish my own business without any worry of how people may negatively perceive me. I carry these experiences and lessons from my young adulthood with me on my adventures and throughout my educational & career pursuits.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I lived bi-coastally for many years between Los Angeles & New York City, and have always described my lifestyle as familiar…yet different.
As a former Fashion Editor for celebrity news publications such as: STAR Magazine and Celebrity Living Weekly, my initial foray into the field was as a Jr. PR Assistant for bridal couturier, Vera Wang.
When I moved from the Editorial side of the industry into Public Relations & Events, I established a boutique firm, Angela Jones PR in 2009. AJPR acquired a variety of clients over the years including: OK! Weekly Magazine, Jacob & Co. Jewelers, Playboy Golf and KDHamptons.com.
However, it was in 2017, while shopping for Leggings so I could join a yoga pop-up retreat with a friend, that fate took over. I couldn’t find any cute, comfy and well-made pairs for less than a $100! I thought that was absurd. So I decided to make my own and familiar…yet different was born!
Since those early launch days, FYD has grown from being known as “just a leggings brand” to now offering Sports Bras and Plus Size Compression Tights & Yoga Pants, and producing full-scale Athleisure collections twice a year that include Unisex Sneakers, Tees & Hoodies!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’ve had the opportunity to work in 3 major fields; Fashion Editorial, PR /Events and the Finance sector.
As ‘there’s a profit in every labor’ I brought my experiences full circle and now Own & Operate a successful Athleisure Apparel & Sneakers brand. Throughout my career I have acquired the ability to identify & curate my market, write advertorials, promote the brand and bring it in all under budget.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
I created the brand to be as inclusive as possible.
FYD offers leggings from XXS to 6XL and Unisex Sweatshirts, Hoodies & Sneakers are also available in a variety of prints & styles. I create these collections with a thoughtful & sustainable production team, all Made in the USA and at an affordable price point.
No matter the size of one’s waistline or wallet, familiar…yet different has you covered!
