We recently connected with Angela Peel and have shared our conversation below.
Angela, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Fairly easily actually, all you have to do is dissect what a “hater” and/or “naysayer” is, which is essentially someone who is functioning from a place of judgement of other, whether provoked or unprovoked. Hating on someone else is a form of projection FROM the hater which usually indicates an energy of lack in themselves, lack of control of their own lives. The saying is “hurt people HURT people”, for a reason. Knowing that (and this is the short version), is what helps me stay centered in myself, regardless of what’s thrown at me. On the other hand, “hatorade” is just fuel for someone like me. I transmute any and all lower energies to reinforce the determination I’ve already created for myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Early in life as an only child, I learned that music and everything related to music was my safe place, my healing and my medicine. The music that I have that’s soon to be released is a mixture of several genres, something I enjoy in my writing process. I tend to write lyrics that are not only catchy, but I lace them with a pinch of sarcasm, blatant truth and a touch of “make you think “.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Interestingly enough, being an only child and becoming very comfortable in my own company from a young age I find that my best work is done in solitude. That’s where I found my ability to focus. Conviction is another one. I’ve known what I want to do in this life since I was about 8 or 9 and no one has ever been able to talk me out of my dreams. I would say the same for anyone out there at the beginning of their journey….let no one talk you out of what you know is right for you. But that comes with a challenge as well. You gotta know YOU first, so that no one can possibly tell you who you are.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always open to those who want to create music with me, be it another songwriter or a co-producer. I’ve worked on many projects in the last several years including providing backup vocals for Season 2 “Queen of the Universe” and several fun musical bits on Ru Paul’s Drag Race. I try to stay away from too much preference like the box of “genre”, as I can sing and perform is any genre from classical, to pop, to rock….I stay open to all.
