Hi Angela, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Being a female DJ in a male Dominated industry is always gonna have its obstacles, but once I stopped trying to be anything other than myself I allowed who I was to shine thru all of my insecurities. I allowed my feminine energy to set the tone of how I played a room. I played for my girls and didn’t try to keep up with or play hard for the boys. I played for what I knew and that was honestly tomboy girls. It’s me I am a Tomboy gal. I love to feel sexy but at the same time can recite most hip hop westcoast classics at the drop of dime. Once I really let me self be just that it it was easy to see no one is me!!!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The last few years I have been blessed to travel the country DJing I’ve built an amazing brand thru the gift of music. I always felt outta place because I wasn’t a one specific music type. During the pandemic I showed my love for all genres and was able to build the most all over the place support base. I have played all the clubs I have ever dreamed of from XS in Las Vegas to Marquee to Coachella to even lading a season with my ultimate team of all time the Las Vegas Raiders. I spend half time time being a big room Rockstar and the other half watering my Chicano culture roots by streaming a Sunday Oldie Formatted show on Twitch. I created a party in the city of Pomona called YER NOT DOWN which celebrates the love of nostalgic music. There really isn’t a genre you cant play and it has become a great creative outlet for me. I hope to excite and inspire girls and women to not allow any limitations especially AGE get in your way. It’s never too late to follow my passion and just accept your self for um who you are. The good the bad and the ehhhhh!!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
One for sure, being raised by a village showed me so many different ways to problem solve and handle different situations. My parents were young so my grandparents and even extended family helped a lot. I learned from a tribe a That I would easily say is the biggest blessing in my life. Learning to adjust to others learning to take criticism and correction and learning to accept people as they are have all been the things that have helped me stay focused. If you are early in your journey I would give you he advice that the Legendary DJ AM gave me… take Every job offered!! Every job gives you the experience and that’s what matters not the time but the time and experience you put in to put u in the position for that pay. Learn learn fail and learn again!!!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes I am currently looking for brands to align with and build my network. I never really focused on that aspect and I know it’s time for me to put some energy there. I’m looking to work with brands that represent a strong sense of self, brands with a wild side cuz I am def a girl who loves a good time and Brands that promote the women and even more so Latina women blazing their over trails.
