Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angelica Dvil. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angelica, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I have always had a rather sunny disposition in general, but especially in a world that is so quick to judge or ridicule others I find that what we can all share is a sense of belonging. I built my optimism up over years after years of learning who I am and accepting who I am . I believe that having a level of self acceptance and self love brings optimism to not only yourself but also for others by default.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have been a drag entertainer for over a decade with beginnings in Southern California. I began in a small bar in Pasadena California called The Boulevard. It all started with giving back as we were raising money for the LA AIDS walk. What started as a 2 night fundraiser turned into an actual career. I have been able to host multiple shows both in California and now in Oregon where I live. I think the thing I love the most about being a drag performer is the people I have met along the way, the friends that have become more like family and connecting with people.
Everyone goes to an event regardless of what it is, to escape for even just a moment. It find connection to something bigger than themself. It’s amazing to perform and have it mean something to even just one person. Connection is what we all want and drag is a beautiful way to do that.
Im currently hosting Portland longest running queer dance party BLOWPONY every 4th Saturday of the month at the White Owl Social Club. It is an amazing place where anyone can come and feel safe to express themself as they want.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think empathy, kindness and the ability to evolve have been instrumental in having success in this career.
I would encourage anyone that is interested in pursuing a career in drag to hold those there close. Remembering that what we do builds connection within the community and showing empathy and kindness not only gives you the ability to have a good reputation but also evolving and staying relevant keeps you in the game.
Surround yourself among those that will support you and live you up.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When Im overwhelmed I make sure to refocus and retreat. I get into nature, read a book (Im currently reading Scythe), dive into a video game or spend time with my partner and kiddos. Re-centering my focus helps me to get my brain right so I can focus.
