We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angeline Carrillo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angeline below.
Hi Angeline, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Honestly, I am not sure that this is something you ever fully “overcome.” I believe it is something you have to continually work on throughout your journey. When I started the company, what I fell back on was the quote: “God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called.” Since then, it has been people. For a long time it was a dear friend who had the gift of encouragement and reminded me of my worth all the time. These days, it is little reminders in my dancers, students, parents, clients, and audience members that what I have created matters, and that it means something to them. It’s the little pockets of hope that come through smiles, laughter, and kind words.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Studio 149 is a space for dance, fitness, and personal training. There are many branches of what we do here. We have two companies: Psalm 149 Dance Company ages 19+; and the Younger Generation Company, ages 13-18. These companies travel to various dance studios, Churches, Conferences, workshops, and wherever else God opens the doors to show our audiences how to worship through dance, how to share what God has done for your life, and what God has done for us. Since the companies opened in 2016, we have seen and at this point worked with hundreds of different dancers and performed between two to five hundred times. We are passionate about what we do and love to share it wherever God opens the doors! These companies are currently working towards our annual performance being held on May 17th and 18th at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. We dance at 7:30pm both nights, but the doors open at 7 for you to explore our Silent Auction!
Our studio offers faith inspired courses that teach students how to use art as worship as well as improve and hone their dance practice. We offer a variety of dance courses for registration that will help students improve their technique and enhance their knowledge of individual styles, as well as drop-in classes for those in the mood to just dance! We also offer a variety of fitness classes and Centering Prayer inspired yoga that will allow participants to find inner peace and deeper connection to the Holy Spirit, while they find healing, strength, balance, flexibility, and relaxation through the age-old practice of yoga! Last, but not least, we also offer personal training services to help you achieve all your fitness goals!
This is a unique studio experience and fitness family that you cannot find elsewhere. We care about you as a person, love you as you are, and want to give you the tools to be successful in dance and fitness in the ways you need.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think most of what I do and how I operate is a little unconventional, so the answer to this is no different. If I had to choose 3 qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have been most impactful on my journey, I would have to say:
1. Work/home life balance with healthy boundaries. Especially in the beginning this was incredibly difficult for me. I am a very hard worker, and would feel like I was never doing enough. My work began to seep into every aspect of my life and it took me a long time to build healthy boundaries for myself. My advice here would be to take time to breathe, to make your boundaries clear upfront to all those you work with, and to hold yourself accountable to keep them.
2. A community around you that builds you up and encourages you.
3. Listening and showing each person you work with that they matter.
I tie these two together because I would not be anywhere without people. They matter deeply and are how you succeed. By surrounding yourself with loving people that encourage you, and by being that person for those you work with and serve, you are able to build something truly special. It creates a lasting impact on anyone who is a part of your business.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I read a lot so I am sure there are countless books I could reference, but the one I continually gravitate back to is “Fierce, Free, and Full of Fire” by Jen Hatmaker. Though this book is geared towards women, I believe it is applicable to others as well. It teaches you to embrace who you were created to be and more importantly to be content in that space. As a business owner, it helped me to learn more about myself and those I work with- not only knowing people deeply but loving them and embracing them as they are. I struggle with this for myself, and this book creates the freedom to celebrate yourself in a way that feels genuine.
