We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angrett Davies. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angrett below.

Angrett, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience stems from my family, particularly the remarkable women. My grandmother found herself as a single mother of young adult children and a grandmother in the 1970s. She worked tirelessly to provide for her family, often responsible for about 15 of us. She made $250 a month working as the head filing clerk for the Department of public work in Liberia. she rose at 4 a.m. to prepare meals for sale to her entire office daily. She also sewed for people and took on various projects for pay. She created multiple streams of income. I’ve heard that in the 1960s, she even transformed part of our home into a store. Her perseverance allowed her to send three of her children abroad: my uncle Radcliff to Europe, another uncle and my mother to the United States. This example of resilience has been ingrained in me—it feels as if it’s coded in my DNA.

Similarly, my mother faced her own trials. After my birth, she required major heart surgery and had to relocate to the United States for treatment. I met my mother when I was 9 and immigrated to the United States. I witnessed her work tirelessly for 16 hours a day, raising five daughters alone while battling health issues. She has never given up, and her determination has shaped my mindset.

I have raised two adult daughters as a single mother, obtained a BA in Psychology, MBA, Chaplaincy, licensed Cosmetologist and a business owner. In the last five years, I have had to navigate my own health challenges. Even after experiencing a stroke in July, there has never been a moment when quitting was an option. I returned to work just days later, my family embodied the belief that we craft the fabric of our future through the decisions and choices we make every day. Sometimes, the only decision to make is the next small step, no matter how difficult that may be.
The women in my family resiliency stems from one thing, our faith in God that we can do all things through Christ Jesus that strengthens us.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’d like to share my journey in business, a journey that has taken me from a degree in Psychology to office management to owning a specialty salon focused on hair loss solutions. It’s been an incredible ride filled with unexpected twists, challenges, and rewards.
A Serendipitous Start
My path into the beauty industry began somewhat accidentally. I was working in office management, feeling unfulfilled and unhappy. I contemplated going back to grad school to earn my MBA before I turn 35. I had made myself that promise when I quit at 25 to continue raising my older daughter. It was during this time of discontent that I began helping my sister at a local salon, braiding hair and discovering my creative passion again.
One day, the owner of the salon overheard me talking about my desire to return to school. Recognizing my natural ability to connect with people, she offered me an apprenticeship. In a moment that changed my life, I decided to seize this opportunity, and my journey in cosmetology officially began.
Building Expertise
After two years of hands-on experience, I had to take a pause as I welcomed my second daughter. It felt like life had given me a detour, but I embraced it. During those years, I immersed myself in my salon work, developing my skills and knowledge, especially in the area of hair loss solutions.
Ultimately, life would bring me back to grad school when my youngest daughter turn 10. It was during this time that I developed the ideas for my current business—a specialty salon that focuses on helping individuals cope with hair loss through solutions like toppers and replacement systems.
The Birth of My Specialty Salon
Today, I am proud to run a successful salon where I offer personalized support to my clients. Every day, I work to create a welcoming atmosphere where individuals facing hair loss can find confidence and restoration. My expertise has empowered me to guide clients through their journeys, providing them with various options that suit their unique needs.
Embracing Technology and Future Endeavors
As I look ahead, I’m thrilled about the future of my business. I’m embracing the digital age and shifting my focus towards enhancing online services, utilizing AI technology to broaden my reach. I want to ensure that anyone who needs support can access it, regardless of their location.
I am also excited to share that I’m planning to launch my own line of hair care products. This venture feels like a natural extension of the work I’m doing in the salon, allowing me to provide comprehensive solutions to my clients. With my children now grown, I finally have the time to explore other projects that have been on hold

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My commitment to education has always taken multiple forms-whether through formal schooling, specialized training in the beauty industry, or delving deep into the wig industry. I’ve consistently sought to expand my knowledge, never confining myself to just one area of expertise in hair. This dedication has not only enriched my professional skills set but has also opened doors to new opportunities I never anticipated.
Finding Balance: Prioritizing Family
However, it’s essential to note that my journey hasn’t been solely about education and career advancement. I’ve always prioritized my family life first. Balancing my responsibilities as a mother while pursuing education and professional goals has been challenging yet rewarding. I made a conscious effort to ensure that my daughters had my attention and support during their formative years.

For anyone embarking on their own journey, my advice is simple: nurture your love for your passion and prioritize what matters most—be it family, personal growth, or career aspirations. Understand that the timeline is yours to define, and the experiences gained along the way will shape you into the person you aspire to be. Embrace every phase of your journey; each accomplishment is a vital piece of your story, and you’ll look back one day and see how beautifully everything came together. Never give up, adapt and navigate changes.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

The Bible has been the cornerstone of my character and decision-making. Its teachings have guided how I treat others, emphasizing principles of service, integrity, and excellence. Verses like Proverbs 2:6 remind me that “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding,” instilling in me a thirst for wisdom that fuels my personal and professional endeavors to learn.
The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner Insights on Transformative Leadership
During my graduate studies, The Leadership Challenge illuminated the qualities of effective leadership. This book reinforced my understanding that the character traits necessary for transformative leadership closely align with biblical teachings. Key takeaways include the importance of authenticity, vision, and the power of collaboration—principles I strive to embody in my own leadership style. Their key research points had a scripture for each
Proverbs**: The Wisdom of the Ages
The Book of Proverbs in the Bible has also offered timeless insights into decision-making and wisdom. Proverbs 1:5 states, “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.” This truth continually inspires me to seek knowledge and understand different perspectives, good advice, team building, reminding me that growth is a lifelong journey.

These key texts—The Bible and The Leadership Challenge, have profoundly influenced my development. The truths I’ve gleaned from them guide my actions, enhance my leadership approach, and nurture my desire for lifelong learning. By integrating these lessons into my life, I strive to serve others excellently while continually growing both personally and professionally.
