Meet Anissa Zermeno

We recently connected with Anissa Zermeno and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Anissa, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

I’ve always been a caring, compassionate person because I’ve never seen the point in treating others poorly. I went through my share of hard times growing up, including being bullied, and when you’re young, those experiences can really shape your mind. They create isolation and pull you into a dark place no one should have to sit in. Overcoming that negativity isn’t easy, but I stayed true to who I am. Even when others didn’t deserve my kindness, I gave it anyway, because what you put into the world eventually comes back to you.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m a local musician from Tempe, Arizona, a member of the band Dangerousbeauty. I’m also the owner of an alternative boutique called Little Delinquents. Dangerousbeauty is an alternative band that explores real and familiar struggles manipulation, mental health, heartbreak, and narcissism issues many people face today. Little Delinquents is a dark sanctuary for the beautifully bold, the rebellious, and those who were never meant to blend in.

Both projects exist to encourage people to take a stand and speak up for themselves. For a long time, I allowed others to walk all over me, feeling like I never truly had a voice or the willpower to live life on my own terms. Losing control over your own story is a painful thing.

That’s why I tell my story through music and fashion to inspire others to embrace who they are without fear. You were born to stand out, to break molds, and to color outside the lines.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

If you have a dream or a goal you want to achieve, go for it anything is possible if you have the willpower to keep pushing forward. I’ve always gone after what I wanted, even when it felt impossible. There were times I wanted to give up, especially when negativity from others started to creep in and my own mind turned against me. There will always be a voice telling you that you’re not good enough or that you’ll never amount to anything but that voice is lying.

Keep pushing. Keep moving forward. Don’t let other people’s opinions slow you down. More often than not, their negativity comes from feeling threatened by your ambition and creativity. Someone once told me, “If they’re hating on you, it’s because you’re doing something right,” and I truly believe that. Sometimes people don’t have anything better to do than to be negative towards you, but that doesn’t get to define your future.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Feeling overwhelmed isn’t new to me it’s something I experience often. My therapist has taught me to slow down, take a moment to breathe, and either write things out or say them out loud. It helps bring clarity and reminds me that everything will be okay. I’ve also learned not to take on more than I can handle, because doing so only leads me back to that overwhelmed state. To stay grounded, I keep everything written down in my calendar, notes and do my best to stay organized. It’s not perfect, but it helps me manage and move forward.
