Meet Anita Powell

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anita Powell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anita below.

Hi Anita, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose in helping other small businesses owned by women of color. Being a woman owned business and also a minority owned business myself, It was hard for me to get off the ground and make a name for myself. So my focus and goal is to help create an authentic online presence for others like me. I also love to read, so I am writing a book about my life experiences that can hopefully show others on the same journey that there can be a happily ever after after years of doubt and hurt. Inspiring others with my story is one of my favorite things to do!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have worked in almost every field at some point in my life trying to figure out what my calling is. With a degree already under my belt in medical billing and coding, I was unhappy and wanted to keep trying new things. I went from mechanic and retail attendant to real estate and event planning, I finally found my calling at 25 and decided to go back to school for marketing. Once I was certified in social media marketing, I was having trouble finding a job that would allow me to work from overseas and follow my husband’s rigorous work schedule, so I decided to start my own agency and become an independent contractor. I have been in business for over 2 years and have worked with more than 20 different types of businesses and clients including photographers, life coaches, crafters, and professional organizers. It is an amazing challenge doing all of the research, page creation, and blog curation for these very different clients, but I love what I do!

My goal is to “make an impact while making an income” and I would love to be known for setting the path for other BIPOCs to not only find a seat at the table, but also create a table from scratch that gives a platform to those who feel unrepresented. I love to showcase the authentic and unique personalities of BIPOC business owners and really connect with their clientele; showing them that you don’t have to change who you are to attract customers. When you are being yourself, the right people with resonate with that and naturally attract to you.

As my book is getting ready for release, I rebranded myself as the BakwaasBarbie. Simply to illustrate how much my life is filled with nonsense and foolishness. Once the first book is available I will be finishing up my next book that shows how I went from a terrible place to living my happily ever after.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Know yourself. When you know who you are it is much easier to present yourself in a genuine way. I found that most people love my energy and vibe and that is the main reason they decide to work with me over a big name company.

Clap for yourself. I have a long line of negative nancies in my ear and behind my back telling me that I’m “not good enough” and “will never make it” so I have to clap for myself and that includes all of my small wins. A simple reshare by a person I admire, a great meeting, or onboarding a new client means a celebration for me because no matter what is being said behind my back, these are proof that I am, in fact, winning.

Don’t limit yourself. When I started, I only offered 3 services, but I was being asked to do more and more. Instead of doing these for just a few, i added them to my services page and business started booming. I tapped into a market that I didn’t expect to have a need for me and expanded greatly. Now I have honed my skills to work more effectively and started writing books on the side to continue to grow myself and my brand recognition.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
I have been a military spouse for the past 10 years and my family has been living overseas. but last month we transitioned back to the US and it feels like I am rebuilding my business all over again. Most of my clients weer local to the area we were living or other milspouses, so now that I am no longer associated with that community, my brand recognition has dropped significantly. I want to once again become the first thought when people are looking for branding and content, so I have been taking over my own pages as well, marketing myself as hard as I can to gain new clients and kick start my business once again.
