Meet Anita Reale

We were lucky to catch up with Anita Reale recently and have shared our conversation below.

Anita, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

My journey into the food and farming industry began in the late 90s, when I started exploring a vegetarian lifestyle. This journey opened my eyes to how much of our food is compromised by chemical regulations and industrial practices that harm the environment and animals. I wanted to understand what it truly meant to grow food in a way that is both healthy for people and respectful to the planet.
This desire led me to dive deeper into sustainable farming practices, focusing on how food can be grown without relying on harmful chemicals or processes that damage the earth. I realized that by learning to grow my own food, I could reconnect with the land, honor nature, and contribute to a healthier world. It became clear that small-scale, sustainable farming could provide an alternative to the industrial food system that often compromises both the environment and the well-being of consumers.
As I explored this path further, my passion for food, farming, and community only grew stronger. Over this time, I learned how to grow and sell food at the farmers’ markets, later I began managing several local farmers markets that eventually led me back to actively farming myself, cultivating not only food but also a sense of connection between people and the land. My purpose is now rooted in the belief that growing and sharing food responsibly can create lasting, positive change for individuals, communities, and the environment.
This journey continues to inspire me every day as I work to foster a more sustainable, ethical, and local food system for everyone.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

What Makes Anita’s AREA Farms Special

At Anita’s AREA Farms, I take immense pride in supporting not only my own farming efforts but also those of fellow small farms across Arizona. Our work is crucial in highlighting the importance of small, hardworking farmers in our state. I firmly believe that Arizona has the potential to grow a diverse range of food year-round, and we are dedicated to moving away from relying on out-of-state or international sources. This vision is essential for building a stronger, more resilient local food system.

One of the biggest challenges in the Arizona farmers’ market scene is authenticity. Many products are misrepresented or falsely sold as local when they aren’t. This compromises the integrity of the market and undermines the efforts of genuine local farmers. My goal is to change this narrative by advocating for transparency and working to create a reliable food system that reflects the true spirit of local agriculture.

Over the past two decades, my involvement in the food and farming industry in Phoenix has gone from a passion to a calling. My journey began in my early 20s, when I first became interested in food, farming, and farmers’ markets. After managing several markets and seeing a lack of local farmers, I made the decision to return to farming—a choice that has proven to be both rewarding and impactful.

I find great satisfaction in every step of the process: from growing and harvesting food to selling it and educating others about how to enjoy fresh, seasonal foods. Growing crops year-round in Arizona’s favorable climate allows me to make a meaningful contribution to our local food system, while fostering a deeper connection with the community.

Anita’s AREA Farms began with the goal of aggregating farm-fresh foods from local farmers and connecting them to customers through farmers’ markets and online sales. More recently, I’ve expanded into growing microgreens and mushrooms using climate-controlled methods, which has broadened the range of highly nutritious, local foods we offer.

Additionally, I’m passionate about promoting sustainability through Edible Landscaping, a service where we replace water-intensive greenery with edible plants. This not only transforms landscapes but also empowers homeowners to engage in local food production.

Entrepreneurship has given me the freedom to combine my love for agriculture, sustainability, and community-building. Every challenge and new initiative only strengthens my commitment to creating a thriving local food system that benefits farmers, consumers, and the environment alike.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking Back: Key Qualities and Skills That Shaped My Journey

Reflecting on my journey, three qualities and areas of knowledge have had the most significant impact on my success in the food and farming industry:

Hands-on Experience in Local Business Operations: Apprenticing under the owner of a small cafe provided invaluable insight into the day-to-day realities of running a local business. I learned firsthand about managing operations, understanding customer needs, and maintaining quality while staying organized and efficient. This experience helped me grasp the importance of attention to detail and adaptability, key skills for running a successful small business.

Long-Term Mentorship in Farming: My decade-long apprenticeship with a woman who ran her own farm was pivotal. During that time, I gained deep knowledge about sustainable farming practices, crop management, and the challenges and rewards of farming. The hands-on experience taught me how to nurture the land while maintaining profitability, and how to create strong relationships within the farming community.

Leadership in Farmers’ Markets: Managing farmers’ markets gave me a broader perspective on what it takes to thrive in the local community. It provided a strategic view of how businesses connect with consumers and how to foster collaboration and authenticity in a local food system. It was a reminder that success is not just about great products but also about building trust, communication, and community engagement.

Advice for Those Early in Their Journey

For those just starting out, I recommend seeking out apprenticeship or mentorship opportunities that allow you to learn directly from experienced business owners or farmers. Real-world experience is invaluable, and learning from those who have been in the industry for years will give you insights that can’t be gained from books alone. Additionally, getting involved in local markets and community-building efforts will help you understand the importance of authenticity and relationships in small business success. Finally, always be adaptable and open to learning—whether from successes or setbacks, every experience adds to your knowledge and growth.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

Biggest Obstacle: Securing Capital for Expansion

The number one challenge I’m currently facing is securing enough capital to fund our new farming endeavors, particularly our expanded mushroom production, after a rough year. We experienced significant profit loss due to a personal injury I sustained earlier in 2024, which set us back financially. As a result, I had to pay extra hours to contract workers just to keep our operations running smoothly during the main season, putting additional strain on our budget.

To overcome this challenge, I am actively seeking additional funding sources, including grants, loans, and partnerships that will help us invest in our farming expansion. We are focusing on growing our mushroom production, including both fresh and dehydrated mushrooms, as well as mushroom powders, which are trending in the market due to their health benefits. I believe this will not only enhance our product offerings but also increase our revenue streams.

Additionally, I’m working on refining our business operations and budgeting to ensure that our income can consistently exceed our expenses. This includes a disciplined approach to spending and exploring new revenue opportunities, such as offering seasonal or subscription-based products.

Securing the capital we need will allow us to move forward with confidence, improve cash flow, and position us for growth in the coming years. It’s a challenge, but I’m committed to overcoming it by leveraging every resource available and staying focused on our long-term vision.
