Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Anita Tempesco. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Anita, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my upbringing. I’m one of 6 and I feel our parents always instilled a great work ethic when we were very young. My grandparents owned a Mom and Pop corner store and we always helped out from the time we could see over the counter. Also, my husband has a tremendous ability to jump into any situation and get the job done.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I graduated from college with a degree in Graphic Design. With that degree I held jobs with a printing company and then entered into visual merchandising. During that time I started taking courses in Interior Design which was always a passion. I used that certification while working with a large paint company and eventually moved into management positions. That career lasted 33 years and I learned so much. It afforded me the ability to retire at a relatively young age. I wanted to continue to use my design skills and open a small home decor and gift shop. The name AnitaTrinket happened due to a conversation with my sister, years earlier. When the shop was opened I used that name in her honor, since she had passed but I could keep her as part of my journey.
The shop has morphed over the last 6 years from setting up at events, to a small vintage store front and now owning a historic building that houses AnitaTrinket and so much more.
Currently, we have over 3000 square feet of retail space. Within that we also have a workshop and venue space called The Barrel Loft. We try to keep our workshops fresh from hosting pasta classes to furniture painting classes and so much more. The store merchandising and purchasing is one of my favorite things to do. Mixing in decor and gifts from other small businesses and beautifully displaying them in themes or colors is most exciting and fulfilling. We support about 35 small local consigners and purchase new, as well. We continue to upgrade the building, so the history will remain for years to come. My family is an important part of this experience. My husband, sons and daughter in laws are super supportive and helpful. Our extended families have been more than generous with their time in helping us succeed. Currently, I have a great team of women who offer impeccable customer service and work ethic.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Drive, creativity and personal strength are what pushes me on. I love the idea of continual change with what customers want. You have to get out there and see what is happening in all types of businesses around you. Be active in your community because thats where you get advice from other small business owners and support from local people who live and work close by. Join the local chamber, they are especially supportive in offering help. Not being afraid to ask for help is probably one of the best words of advice. Take a chance on ideas that seem hard, those are probably your best ideas for growth. Always remember to be yourself. There is no need to stress over what others are doing. You must find your own niche and bloom within that.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed I remind myself of how lucky I am to have gotten this far. I have so much faith that gets me through. I’m so thankful for my family and friends supporting me thats what drives me to stay positive.
If a particular idea doesn’t work, I never get down on myself, I just pivot to a different idea and move on. Ask for help, reinvent your idea or morph it into a new and better outcome. Never dwell on what you think has failed. Use it as fuel to create a fulfilling idea.
