We were lucky to catch up with Aniya Powell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aniya , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I developed my confidence and self-esteem through a passion for doing nails that began when I was 9. I taught myself by using kits like Kiss nails and refining my skills. Words of encouragement from peers at school, who admired my work. my belief in my abilities and inspired me to continue and as I grow to Pursue a future nail career.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist specializing in nails and hair, with a primary focus on nails. My passion lies in bringing my clients’ visions to life while ensuring their natural nails remain healthy under enhancements. I believe in the importance of nail care so clients can continue enjoying beautiful nails long-term. My business vision is to launch my LLC and create a one-stop, Black-owned beauty destination where women can access a full range of services lashes, makeup, hair, nails, facials, and more under one roof. I want to hire committed young adults who saw the similar vision I saw as a kid. I aim to streamline the beauty experience, eliminating the need to visit multiple locations. Additionally, I plan to develop an educational platform offering 1-on-1 classes for individuals of all ages, providing them with a solid foundation to build their own careers in the beauty industry.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As a nail technician, my top three qualities are centered around foundation, professionalism, and communication.
Passion for Foundation It’s essential to perfect the basics and continuously practice your foundation. A strong, well-practiced foundation not only ensures high-quality results but also builds confidence in your work. When clients trust your expertise, they won’t question your techniques, and you can confidently explain the processes behind each service.Professionalism No matter the challenges or doubts from others, maintaining professionalism is key. Embrace your craft and stand firm in your skills. In this industry, owning your work and staying consistent is essential to building a lasting reputation.Strong Communication Skills Understanding your clients’ needs is crucial. While clients may not always articulate their desires perfectly, it’s important to listen carefully and ask clarifying questions. Many clients have had negative experiences in the past and may not feel comfortable speaking up, which is why creating a welcoming environment for open communication is vital. For example, I provide aftercare kits with a cuticle pusher, file, buffer, cuticle oil, and instructional cards to help clients maintain their nails at home, reinforcing the importance of nail health and showing my commitment to their care. The three core skills I focus on are Attention to Detail, Creativity and Technical Skill. Attention to detail ensures precision and consistency, which improves with practice. Mastering technical skills, such as nail shaping, application, and design, is part of being confident in your foundation. Lastly, creativity allows me to deliver unique, custom nail designs that reflect the client’s personal style and vision. For anyone in the beauty industry, my advice is simple: perfect your foundation, communicate effectively with your clients, invest in ongoing learning, and always strive to bring your clients’ visions to life.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Losing my mom the beginning of 2024 has been one of the most difficult experiences of my life. There were moments when I feared my grief and depression would overwhelm me, but in those dark times, I held onto something my mom always told me: *”Don’t give up on your business and your future.”* Her words, along with the love and guidance of my grandma, mom, and other loved ones who continue to watch over me as my angels, keep me pushing forward. I carry them with me in everything I do, knowing they are a part of my growth. With faith in God, I continue this journey, and it’s because of the support from everyone around me that I’ve been able to keep going.
I am deeply grateful to every person who has supported me—whether from the very beginning when I had no clients, or now as I’ve built meaningful relationships with clients and mentors who believed in me. There encouragement has been invaluable, and they all played a role in watching me grow. For that, I am forever thankful.
Now 2025 is here , I’m excited to share the knowledge and wisdom I’ve gained through my work as your nail tech and, soon, as an educator. I’m looking forward to what the future holds and the opportunities to continue growing. Everyone’s belief in me is the driving force behind my commitment to improving every day.Thank you to each of them for being a part of this journey. Your support fuels my passion, and I am beyond grateful. I appreciate everyone’s more than words can express.
