Meet Anjali Shah

We recently connected with Anjali Shah and have shared our conversation below.

Anjali, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from my mom. She was the most resilient, determined person I knew and she led by example. She taught me to never give up, keep trying, believe in myself, and that there’s always a way to make something work or solve a problem – you just have to be a little creative sometimes. When I started my business there wasn’t a roadmap or any clear path to success, I’ve had to pivot multiple times, try different things, push myself out of my comfort zone and deal with the ups and downs of running my own business – and I truly believe it’s her model of resilience that I’ve been able to pull from that’s carried me through!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a nutritionist, health coach and food blogger: I run a food blog called The Picky Eater focused on healthy, plant-based, family-friendly recipes! I love what I do because I’m passionate about helping people get healthy, and making healthy eating easier, less restrictive, more satisfying, and less stressful for everyone. I started my blog to help my fast-food-loving husband eat healthier foods, but over time it’s grown into a community of thousands of people that I feel so lucky to be able to support! I just a launched a few e-books and a plant based eating course to help me scale my impact, and to be able to provide more resources to my clients that I coach as well!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think being super organized (especially with time management), being creative, and being a lifelong learner are the three skills that have been the most impactful. Because when you’re a nutritionist or a food blogger and are running your own business, you have to be able to be organized and manage your time because you wear so many different hats as a small business owner! Being efficient is the only way I can make it all work and still be present for my family! Also – creativity, being able to try new things, pivot, figure out new ways of getting your message out there are also so important. And lastly, things in our industry are constantly changing so being able to keep learning and growing and having that hunger for learning new things is really important as well. For people just starting out, I’d say – figure out what you need to keep yourself organized. Some people use planners like Trello or Notion, others use online calendars to make schedules daily, there’s also the Pomodoro method – figure out what works and stick to it! For creativity and continually learning – my biggest piece of advice is just to not be afraid to put yourself out there and try new things or pitch your services – the worst that can happen is that someone says no, which is really not so bad! Often times we psych ourselves out before we even start – so try not to let that happen!

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I try to get all of my thoughts out on paper so that they’re not swimming around in my head. Usually that’s a combination of journaling, to do lists, and random thoughts or ideas. Once I get it all down on paper, I start to organize it (e.g. putting the journaling type thoughts into an actual journal, putting the to-do list items on my calendar and blocking out the time I’m going to need to take care of them, etc.) Bringing structure and concrete action plans to chaos is my way of dealing with overwhelm!
