MEet ANN Maynard Payne

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful ANN Maynard Payne a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi ANN, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I most definitely get my work ethic from my parents. They worked hard all their lives and showed me that with hard work and dedication comes reward. We didn’t take fancy vacations but we were all quite happy with the yearly camping trips that allowed our family to enjoy some much needed time to relax and reconnect.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a DONA certified postpartum doula who works in the Tampa Bay area. I am the owner of Tampa Bay Postpartum Doula Services and I service Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties. I provide one on one care to families who have recently given birth. My goal as a postpartum doula is to ease the transitional period in the months after a family welcomes a new baby into their family. I provide emotional, mental, physical, lactation and sleep support to families. I am trained in infant feeding whether it is by breast or bottle, all aspects of infant care and sleep shaping. I am committed to providing evidence-based care and I participate in continuous training to stay up to date on how to provide the best care. Every family is different and has unique needs and I tailor my services to meet these needs. I provide both daytime and overnight care to best help each family’s needs. Website: Tampabaypostpartumdoula.com

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Having worked as a social worker for many years, I feel that the interpersonal skills that I learned from this career have helped me enormously in working with families of many different cultures. Another area that has had a positive impact on how I work with families comes from my own experience as a new parent and all the struggles that go along with that. Having experienced breastfeeding issues and postpartum depression, I am in a unique position to really be able to identify with other parents experiencing these issues. My spiritual journey has also had a huge impact on my success as a postpartum doula.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
For me, focusing on self-care is essential. If I give all of my time, energy, and attention solely to my business or clients, I have nothing left to give to myself or my family. By making self care a priority, I find that I can manage the stress of running a business and working full time. Things like; massages, acupuncture, proper rest, meditation, exercise, and therapy are some of the self-care areas that I focus on.
