We were lucky to catch up with Anna Currie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Anna, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I’ve always loved art. Except I didn’t know that was what I wanted to pursue until I was in middle school when my art teacher at the time looked at my work and told me I was talented and should continue making art. So throughout middle school and high school, I kept drawing pretty much everyday. Then when I was accepted into SCAD, I knew then it was my purpose to be an Artist. Maybe I knew from the beginning, but it didn’t solidify until I was in college. Now, about to graduate, I keep finding new ways to improve and create art in a way that’s keeps my purpose alive.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Well, I guess to start, My name is Anna and I’m from Beaumont, Texas. I am an illustrator and fine artist who loves to draw characters and small details that really tell a story of what my art is about. I love to sketchbook and create work that brings joy to people’s faces. In high school I even created a business with my friend to create prints, stickers and stationary. It was a short lived business but it gave me an idea of what I wanted to do later in life. I’m still in college so my career hasn’t taken off yet, but I want to create prints, patterns, characters for books and so much more. I believe what makes my art special is the fact I believe my talent is not my own. I am a christian and what I do is for the Lord and my talents comes from God. I create work that reflects who I am as a person and my experiences in life. I love to travel, play video games, listen to music and have tea parties with my Grandma. Everything I do in life inspires me to create art that not only fills me with joy, but others as well.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe a quality that is most important to have is self-confidence. Being self confident in what you do is extremely important! There are so many people in the art industry who have found their voice and share it with the world. Its easy to get caught up and start comparing your work to others. So learning how to love your work and what you create as your own is incredibly important. Second would be having passion. Being passionate about what you do and create can help you in the long run. If you aren’t passionate about your work, you’ll quickly lose inspiration and motivation to keep going. Being passionate is something very important when pursuing art. Lastly, I would say time management is key. Being able to work on different projects all at once can be difficult but if you plan out your day from the start, it will help you stay organized and less stressed. Time management is something I took awhile to learn, but it’s helped me in so many ways.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents have help me in so many different ways that it’s almost impossible to answer this question. However, one of the most impactful things they have done was supporting my artistic journey since I was a kid. They supported my art journey since I was in elementary school when all I did was come home from school, take out some paper and start drawing. I remember when I drew a portrait for the first time successfully and it was Elsa from frozen. I remember my parents telling me how amazing it was! It filled me with joy that I just kept going and kept practicing my art. So thank you mom and dad for never giving up on me and allowing me to go to a college that will help me grow as an artist.
