We recently connected with Anna Hsu and have shared our conversation below.
Anna, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Throughout my journey of developing confidence and self-esteem, I have come to realize that the traditional notion of confidence as being outspoken, bold, and assertive does not encompass the full spectrum of what it means to truly embody confidence. As a quiet and shy kid growing up, I always tried to force myself into that mold, and often felt like I would never become a confident person.
However, everything changed when I met my mentor, Alyssa Nobriga, 4 years ago. In her presence, I witnessed a different kind of confidence–one that was gentle yet incredibly powerful. I still remember how Alyssa, without uttering a single word, commanded the attention of the entire room as she walked in, and a calm hush enveloped the space. This was a pivotal moment in my confidence journey, as it opened my eyes to the possibility of embracing my own unique version of confidence.
From that moment on, I began to learn that confidence is multidimensional. It is an energy that radiates from within, and is not reserved to being loud or outgoing. Instead of subscribing to societal beliefs about what confident people should be like, I started asking myself, “What energy do I want to embody today?” I discovered that authenticity is far more powerful than any superficial “trick” to appear confident. It also became clear to me that even those who we label as “confident” have their moments of self-doubt, or even constantly deal with feeling not good enough.
Developing confidence is not an overnight transformation. It is a journey that requires self-compassion and the willingness to unlearn and let go of everything that we are not. Alyssa always said, “You already ARE confident—it’s just about clearing away what’s preventing you from embodying that.”
Now, after years of actively healing the blocks, I feel more self-expressed than ever, and no longer am captive of what others think. Because I know and am grounded in who I truly am, and that’s something no one can take away from me. This is why I am so passionate and committed to helping others experience the same.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a certified transformational self-worth coach, my focus is on empowering go-getters and high-achievers to experience a lasting sense of fulfillment and worthiness that extends beyond external achievements. My mission is to guide individuals in healing and overcoming negative beliefs and patterns that may be holding them back from living a truly fulfilling life.
With a compassion-based approach, I support my clients in experiencing their self-worth. Through the experience, they gain the tools and insights necessary to nurture a deep sense of self-love, recognize their inherent worthiness, and embrace their authentic selves. Clients always leave sessions feeling empowered and grounded in peace, in awe of their inner power.
Alongside one-on-one coaching, I offer speaking engagements and workshops for organizations, focusing on mental health and self-development. Through this work, we can contribute to creating a world where people thrive mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
(1) Presence–to be fully present with a person is more healing than any other “skill” in the world. Humans’ deepest desire is to be fully seen and accepted as they are, and if we can do that for each other, we can heal the world. See them, accept them, and don’t try to change them. Once people feel fully seen and accepted, they will naturally become open to change. (2) Openness–we can’t learn anything if we aren’t open to new ways of being. Even if you feel like you already know, being open to hearing things in another way can shed light and open a new doorway in your mind. Be willing to explore and see what feels aligned for you. Your feeling of alignment will guide you to the answers your heart seeks.
(3) Service over performance–One of my favorite mantras is “I am here to serve, not impress”. Often we can get caught up in our minds of “Am I doing enough? Is this good enough?” and we enter the path down towards self-sabotage. But this is placing our attention onto US instead of the world. The world doesn’t need perfect; it needs your presence (as defined in number 1 :)). When you find yourself worrying, re-set your intention.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
The client-coach relationship is extremely important, and so I only accept clients who I know will absolutely benefit and transform from coaching if they actively apply and take the action they learn from coaching. That being said, what I look for in a client is openness to try new ways of being, a willingness to explore their inner world, and a drive to become their best selves. Clients who have these traits consistently make a 180 transformation, especially internally. From feeling constantly anxious and filled with negative self-talk, to feeling grounded no matter what and the voice of self-love and compassion being louder than the inner critic, these kinds of clients thrive in our coaching containers together.
