We were lucky to catch up with Anna Mumau recently and have shared our conversation below.
Anna, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Base your goals on how you want to FEEL – not what you want to DO – and then reverse engineer that goal. If you want to feel confident, what do you need to do in order to feel that way? Do you need to lose 20 lbs (how do you go about that: exercise each morning, eating better, etc)? Break it in to small chunks.
Confidence comes from keeping little promises to yourself: take those small things, from above (i.e. exercise, eating better) and then DO IT.
Personal development.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a professional makeup artist, with an emphasis on bridal. I’ve been a bridal makeup artist for 5 years. In college I was a waitress. I would hand people their food, and their face would light up. I remember thinking, “I would love a job where I could help people feel that way. ” With bridal makeup, I’m able to gives brides a gift that they may not be able to give themselves. Not everyone knows how to do their makeup. I’m able to give brides the gift of seeing themselves possibly in a way that they’ve never seen themselves.
My favorite part about what I do, is that it’s not “just” makeup: I stay with brides for several hours, after initial services are complete, and help them throughout the day. I hold the dress and veil as they walk, touch them up during photos, and am their personal assistant and touch-up specialist during their big day.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Communication & interpersonal skills: if you don’t know how to speak to others & communicate effectively, this will be difficult for you!
2. Persistence/stubbornness/driven: I don’t stop. I’m self motivated. No one will hand this career to you. You have to find it for yourself.
3. An “eye”: if you aren’t naturally somewhat artistic, you’ll have a more difficult time breaking in to this industry.
Advice: lay down your ego. Seek. Learn. Invest in your business.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I love partnering with and collaborating with others! I’m always looking for photographers, videographers, and hair stylists to partner with, that are wanting to break in to the luxury market and serve brides who have a big vision for their wedding day. I love working with other professionals who are PROFESSIONAL and have an eye for their art.
