Meet Annette Palmer

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Annette Palmer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Annette, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My Dad started his own business when I was around 10 years old, he worked from home and was always working hard, day and night, it was what I was raised with so it’s just a normal lifestyle for me to be busy.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a visual artist, a painter, I am happiest when I am working on my larger works. I work with acrylic paint, collage elements and found items on canvas, I enjoy experimenting with different textures and finishes. My collage materials include vintage maps, letters, metal leafs and other interesting papers which I upcycle. I also use found beach objects, twines and nets, which I embed in the texture and then paint. My work is about connection, places and people, the stories of our lives, the birds flying from one place to another, the beach finds reinforcing a location in the canvas.

I am currently showing my work at Art Museum TX in Sugarland as part of their winter exhibition

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Like most skillsets, an artist benefits from 10,000 hours of practice. I believe that drawing is a necessary foundation for all art, it’s an essential focusing and observation tool. Art is a journey which develops as a person grows and changes, so I’d say don’t be afraid to try something new, learn about how to market your work and keep drawing!

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did was to encourage my creativity and support my decision to go to art college.
