Meet Annette Walter

We were lucky to catch up with Annette Walter recently and have shared our conversation below.

Annette, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I think my resilience comes from a lot of hurdles I faced while growing up without a mother and being raised by my uncle. He took custody of myself and my siblings after my mom and grandmother passed. He had no idea how to raise kids but did the best he could. I had to learn a lot about being a young black woman by myself and with the help of my best friends of 25 years. I didn’t have any mother figures. We struggled a lot financially and I learned to do the best with what I had. It’s truly the reason why whatever I go through in life I know I will get through it because I’ve been through so much already at a young age. Nothing can stop me.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

UrbanKinksNCurls is my styling brand that I started 5 years ago as a creative outlet after working on a computer all day in NYC. I started out just posting pictures of outfits that I styled myself with clothes I already had. It’s now turned into a small business where I create style content for social media. I work with a lot of small brands styling their pieces to give people inspiration on how to wear and re-style them. I love to work with fashion as a tool to uplift women. It can really boost and bring out the confidence of woman. It’s helped me throughout my life, and I want to be able to do the same for women especially moms. I truly believe when you look good, you feel good and do good. I’m planning on expanding UrbanKinksNCurls into a small boutique hopefully by late fall just in time for the holidays starting with accessories, so be on the lookout for that.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I would say consistency is the number one quality that has made the most impact on my journey. On social media platforms is so easy for your followers to forget you but when you show up consistently, they start to see you more and it helps to build a relationship with them. Your following then turns into a community. They start to expect you on their daily feeds for style content. I would also say being yourself no matter what everyone else is doing. After a while your followers will be able to tell you’re not genuine. It makes creating content easier when you are being yourself. Lastly, networking is very important. Sometimes going to special events and meeting other content creators can open a lot of doors for opportunities and even start friendships in the long run. It has for me.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

The number one obstacle that I’m facing right now is dealing with these changing social media algorithms on different platforms. It’s caused my content reach to be very low. My following and numbers have been stagnant for the past year I would say. It makes it harder to get paid brand collaborations to keep my small business a float. To resolve this, I just started to create more of the content that I love and trust that my people will find me in the long run. Some things will always be out of your control, and you must roll with the punches and keep doing what you love regardless.
