We recently connected with Annika Egerstedt and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Annika, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
My confidence really started when I moved states. Coming from a smaller studio I was one of the most advanced so when I got to a bigger studio I was a little defeated. I had to realize that there are so many people with amazing talents that I will never have to recognize that everyone is gifted in their own way. There is plenty of opportunities for people and it’s important to celebrate others rather than compare myself to them or let jealousy damped my mood. This made me realize my strengths and focus on myself and really start developing my own style. That was a year ago and I still struggle with confidence but I am able to wake up each day and be happy with who I am and my skill set. I try not to compare but instead appreciate what everyone brings to the table.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a circus performer who has been practicing for 14 years. I started when I was 5 years old and have become advanced in many aerial disciplines. I am currently seeking a professional career and growing connections in the circus community. My dream would be to perform in a well known circus with my identical twin Olivia Egerstedt.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The main area of knowledge that was important was learning how to teach. I work a lot with teens who might be struggling with self confidence and it’s been really impactful to help create a safe and welcoming space. a couple qualities that are important to me are determination and letting go of self doubt. A piece of advice I’d give people starting out is to celebrate yourself and make sure to enjoy the experience. I believe that anyone can make something out of themselves as long as they are doing it for themselves and really enjoying what they are doing.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I love to collaborate with other teachers or performers. I feel I can learn something from anyone as we all bring different skills. I really enjoy working with other teachers as I gain more understanding of certain moves and learn new ways to approach skills and that makes me a better teacher.
