Meet Anoushka Bhalla

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anoushka Bhalla a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Anoushka, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being the only one in the room as an Indian artist in a field with limited representation for South Asians has taught me to roll with the punches. It’s all about turning challenges into opportunities, leveraging my unique cultural perspective for some fresh insights. I’ve built up a solid support crew in the artistic community, both close to home and globally, and that’s been a game-changer. Finding mentors who get where I’m coming from has given me the guidance and pep talks I need. Plus, I’m all about getting involved in projects that push for more diversity in the arts, trying to make the scene more inclusive for South Asian artists. In my work and just by being around, I hope to shake things up a bit, breaking down barriers and giving a shout-out to others from underrepresented backgrounds to go after their artistic dreams.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Certainly! As an artist, my focus is on creating thought-provoking and emotionally resonant works that explore themes of collective trauma, memory, and the human experience. What excites me most about my artistic career is the opportunity to use my creative expression as a catalyst for dialogue and introspection. Through my paintings and mixed-media pieces, I aim to challenge societal norms, provoke reflection, and shed light on overlooked narratives.

What sets my work apart is its deeply research-driven nature, drawing inspiration from archival photojournalism and historical accounts, particularly those related to colonial legacies and marginalized communities. This intersection of literature, history, and art allows me to create multi-dimensional narratives that resonate with viewers on both intellectual and emotional levels.

I’m particularly excited about my upcoming exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York City, and internationally, where I’ll be showcasing my latest series of paintings.

In addition to my exhibitions, I’m also exploring new avenues for collaboration and outreach with nonprofit organizations and institutions to use art as a tool for social change and advocacy. Overall, I’m deeply committed to using my artistic practice as a means of fostering understanding, empathy, and connection in today’s increasingly fragmented world.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful are resilience, continuous learning, and authenticity. Resilience involves cultivating a growth mindset, embracing failure, and staying committed to goals despite obstacles. Continuous learning requires openness to new ideas, mediums, and perspectives through workshops, courses, and self-directed study. Authenticity emphasizes embracing individuality, expressing oneself genuinely, and avoiding comparisons to others. My advice for those early in their journey is to prioritize self-discovery, invest in personal and professional development, and stay true to their unique artistic vision while embracing every experience as a stepping stone in their growth.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
In overcoming challenges and developing essential skills, qualities, and knowledge, my journey has been greatly influenced by the support and guidance of my family, partner, friends, and mentors. Their unwavering encouragement and belief in my abilities have provided the foundation for my growth and resilience. My family has been a constant source of support, providing emotional encouragement and practical assistance throughout my artistic endeavors. My partner has been my rock, offering invaluable feedback and unwavering encouragement. Friends have provided a network of support and camaraderie, fostering creativity and collaboration. Mentors have offered guidance, wisdom, and invaluable insights, helping me navigate challenges and hone my craft. Together, their collective support has been instrumental in shaping my journey and helping me overcome obstacles along the way.
