Meet Anthony Hoagie Cicali

We were lucky to catch up with Anthony Hoagie Cicali recently and have shared our conversation below.

Anthony Hoagie, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

For the Nerdthusiast Poker Podcast, keeping creativity alive is all about staying engaged with the ever evolving poker world, constantly seeking out fresh perspectives, and bringing in exciting new voices. Brian and I, Hoagie, make it a priority to connect with inspiring guests, rising stars, seasoned pros, and industry insiders. Especially ones who bring unique insights and stories that our audience enjoys.

One way we fuel our creativity is by stepping outside our comfort zone. We don’t just stick to the same poker rooms, we visit new venues, explore different poker cultures, and even take part in unique tournaments. Whether it’s a WSOP Main Event in vegas or an underground home game, every experience gives us fresh material and new angles to discuss on the podcast.

Another key to staying creative is adaptability. Poker is always changing, and so is content creation. We pay close attention to what’s relevant, whether it’s a major tournament series, a controversial ruling, we shape our discussions around what players actually want to hear.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Brian and I started the Nerdthusiast Poker Podcast during COVID as something to look forward to each month, a way to stay connected with the game we love while live poker was on hold. At the time, most poker podcasts focused heavily on strategy, and while we respect the X’s and O’s of the game, we wanted to take a different approach. Instead of just hand breakdowns and GTO talk, we created a show that dives deep into poker culture, the stories, the people, and the experiences that make the game so special.

What makes our podcast unique is the wide range of topics we cover. We break down poker movies, review classic and modern poker books, share our experiences visiting new poker rooms, and keep listeners up to date on East Coast poker tournament news. We also love bringing on guests, from underground grinders to major tournament winners. They get to share their journeys and insights. Every episode is about making poker feel fun, engaging, and accessible for players of all skill levels.

Right now, we’re expanding in a few exciting ways. We’re working on more in-depth interviews with rising stars in the poker world. Whether it’s reviewing a hidden gem poker book, or breaking down the latest tournament series, we’re all about keeping poker relevant and entertaining.

For those who love the game, whether you’re a casual home game player or a serious grinder, the Nerdthusiast Poker Podcast is here to bring you content that celebrates everything that makes poker great.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back on our Nerdthusiast Poker Podcast journey, three key qualities have had the biggest impact on our success:

1. Consistency
From the very beginning, Brian and I made it a priority to put out a show just about every month. Whether we had a big tournament coming up or life got in the way, we stayed committed to delivering fresh content for our listeners. Consistency is what builds an audience and keeps people engaged. My advice for anyone starting a podcast or content project? Set a schedule and stick to it. Even when motivation dips, consistency is what separates hobbyists from those who build something lasting.

2. Authenticity
We’re poker players first, before we ever thought about podcasting. That means when we talk about poker, it comes from a place of real experience, passion, and knowledge. We aren’t just throwing out strategy buzzwords; we’re sharing real stories, talking about promotions we actually play, and keeping the content relevant to what’s happening in the poker world. If you’re just starting out, be yourself and focus on what you genuinely love, because that passion is what keeps listeners coming back.

3. Networking & Promotion
One of the biggest ways we’ve grown the podcast is by spreading the word at every tournament we play opganically. Whether it’s chatting with players at the table, getting guests lined up, or promoting the show at poker events, we actively put ourselves out there. If you’re early in your journey, never underestimate the power of simply talking to people in your niche. Relationships and connections can take your project further than any algorithm ever will.

At the end of the day, our success comes down to showing up, being real, and putting in the effort to grow the community. If you focus on those three things, you’ll be ahead of most people starting out in content creation.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Absolutely! We’re always looking to collaborate with people who have a passion for poker and a great story to share. Whether you’re a poker pro, vlogger, author, tournament grinder, or industry insider, we’d love to have you on the Nerdthusiast Poker Podcast.

If you’ve had a major tournament win recently, are promoting a new poker book or project, or just want to talk about your experiences in the game, we want to hear from you. We’re especially interested in guests who bring something unique to the table—whether it’s a deep knowledge of the industry, a fresh perspective on poker culture, or an entertaining journey through the poker world.
