We were lucky to catch up with Anthony Jenkins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Anthony, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose through a transformative journey involving fitness, mindfulness, and sobriety. I realized that many of my struggles stemmed from a lack of follow-through—a result of low mental resolve and being too comfortable with that state. Substances and alcohol numbed the drive I should have felt to pursue a more complete, fulfilling life, aligned with my values.
Embracing fitness and mindfulness, and committing to sobriety, helped me reframe my life in a way I’d be proud to share with my children. Today, I lead a life that is fully under my control, where I feel strong, confident, and capable. This purpose, rooted in health and mindfulness, keeps me grounded, accountable, and driven to live each day in alignment with my values.
When i realized how happy i had become after making these changes, i realized that my purpose was to teach, share and spread this way of life.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m the founder of Philly Fitness Xperiment, where we blend high-intensity interval training (HIIT), bodyweight exercises, and functional fitness to create a holistic, empowering experience for our clients. This journey began as a personal transformation, rooted in my own need for a purpose-driven life and fueled by fitness, mindfulness, and sobriety. Today, that passion has evolved into a thriving training business focused on helping others build resilience, discipline, and self-confidence.
What excites me most about my work is watching clients reach new physical and mental heights. Every session is designed to push limits, helping clients discover strength they didn’t know they had. Whether online or in person, our approach focuses on accessibility, community, and accountability, creating an environment where clients can thrive.
We recently hosted our second Health and Wellness Day, which gave people a chance to experience our fitness philosophy firsthand and engage with a supportive community. Going forward, I’m focused on expanding our events, developing new programs, and continuing to bring accessible, transformative fitness to the Philly area and beyond. I want Philly Fitness Xperiment to be a place where people feel empowered to live their fullest lives, and I’m excited for what’s next on this journey.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities stand out as most impactful: resilience, self-discipline, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
1. Resilience:
Building resilience was crucial. I learned that setbacks are part of growth and that overcoming them only strengthens you. My advice is to view challenges as stepping stones. Practice reframing obstacles as opportunities to grow. The more you push through difficult moments, the stronger and more adaptable you become.
2. Self-Discipline:
Self-discipline has been essential, especially in maintaining fitness, mindfulness, and sobriety. I discovered that consistency is the foundation for success in any area. For those early on, start by setting small, realistic goals, and hold yourself accountable. Develop routines that reinforce your goals, whether it’s a daily workout, a meditation practice, or making mindful choices. Small actions, repeated over time, lead to meaningful results.
3. Lifelong Learning:
The willingness to keep learning has been invaluable. Whether it’s improving fitness techniques, studying mindfulness, or staying informed about wellness trends, this curiosity keeps me growing. For anyone starting out, invest time in reading, taking courses, or seeking mentors in your field. Staying curious and open to learning will keep you motivated and inspired.
My journey taught me that these qualities are like muscles—you develop them over time. By focusing on resilience, self-discipline, and learning, anyone can lay a solid foundation for a fulfilling and successful path.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I believe it’s important to balance both. Focusing on our strengths allows us to shine in areas where we’re naturally gifted and make a unique impact. However, working on weaknesses can foster personal growth, building resilience and adaptability. Each approach brings something valuable, and together, they create a solid foundation for success.
In my journey, I initially leaned into my strength in fitness, using it as a foundation to build Philly Fitness Xperiment. But I soon realized that to create a well-rounded business, I needed to address areas where I wasn’t as naturally strong, such as business management and public speaking. Early on, I struggled with engaging clients outside of training sessions—promoting my brand, networking, and presenting myself confidently. Working on these areas felt uncomfortable at first, but investing time and effort here allowed me to connect with my community and grow my business in a way that felt authentic.
So, while I’m a believer in maximizing strengths, I also know that growth happens outside our comfort zones. Building skills in areas where I initially felt weaker not only improved my business but gave me a greater sense of confidence and capability. My advice is to play to your strengths, but don’t ignore areas where improvement could make you more versatile and resilient. Embracing both has made a big difference for me, and I think it’s the best way to build a fulfilling career and life.
