We were lucky to catch up with Anthony Mihaly recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
I have had a great journey figuring out what self-care means to me, learning what I need to get though struggles and the importance of discovery. One thing that I have learned is that you are not always aware of your self-care when some little things become habits, which makes for a good barometer for when things are not feeling right, you can realize it more quickly because you start to notice the habits slipping. For me, if I am not taking regular baths (1 or 2 a week), my whole system begins to crumble…
Self-care keeps us in touch with ourselves, and when you feel safe and taken care of your effectiveness increases drastically,
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Do you know that feeling you get when you tell a friend about a new place and they go and they love it! I dream of those moments in relationships, and I want to create spaces that make friendships tighter, and lovers more in love.
My story in the food industry started by serving banquets at 16 0r 17, I fell in love with the preparation and the detail and the performance of it all. Maybe it has something to do with me already being interested in music and in art that this passion stuck around. I loved to learn about hospitality and psychological nuances of guests, observing my coworkers and bosses, differing management style’s and their effects on moral, what is standard and what is personal preference. I learned all that I could, moving from role to role, FOH manager, line cook, lead server, bartender, kitchen manager, launches, you name it; all the while knowing that the time would come for me to start my own concepts one day. I believe that day is arriving soon. I have plans for a summer pop up, and more to come,
It is hard to explain what I do because I am still learning how to do it, but what I do is a life long pursuit, to find the lost city and bring the experience back to the people. What I love about creating an experience, whether it be a musical show, a special dinner or a full scale concept is that what is going to help it succeed is if you gave it feeling, and everyone has some of that to give.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe that the people who show the patience, people who understand and honestly talk about the ups and downs of life, are the individuals that you want to be around.
Timing has a lot less to do with you, and a lot more to do with the universe, literally don’t sweat it. Stay focused on the tasks at hand when things don’t go to plan, it’s probably not because you are doing anything wrong, usually its because there is a piece that wasn’t fitting or a piece you didn’t know you didn’t have; let things ebb and flow, and try not to force anything.
I wished that I asked more questions and that I didn’t have so many doubts about my competence. No one knows what they are doing most of the time. and when they do know what they are doing they are almost always willing to share that knowledge with you. Learn something that you can pass on. Take charge.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
When it comes to achieving my current goals, I know that it might be cliche, but I am having a very hard time getting out of my own way, trusting that what I am working on is what I envision for myself, that the life that I want to create is My plan; that change is always hard even if we know it’s good change, our bodies and our minds can’t tell the difference. I am working towards a day when I can look back and laugh about how I couldn’t decide which dream to live.
