Meet Anthony Sturmas

We were lucky to catch up with Anthony Sturmas recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Anthony with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

My strong work ethic is a reflection of my parents’ influence, particularly my father, who set high standards through his unwavering determination. My mother, hailing from Argentina, instilled in me a nurturing spirit, while my Lithuanian father taught me the importance of responsibility and discipline. From him, I gained skills like target shooting and camping, while my mother inspired me to be bold and fight for what I believe in. Together, they instilled in me a profound respect for structure, persistence, and the value of steady progress—qualities that seem increasingly rare today. Their combined teachings have shaped me into someone who works not only diligently but with intention, balancing emotional insight with strategic focus, and facing challenges with both resilience and grace.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

With over 26 years of experience as a storyboard artist and a portfolio of 94 titles, I occasionally take on directing roles, including an upcoming film set in Mexico that explores vampires and the black market (SYFY thriller)—though that’s a discussion for another time. In my role as a storyboard artist, I create essential visuals that establish the film’s layout and tone, which I believe is crucial for the filmmaking process. While some directors choose to forgo storyboards, I consider this a significant oversight. To effectively translate a director’s vision into visual form, I require actor references, location shots, and details about any unique props or elements featured in the film.

A successful storyboard artist must possess a blend of artistic, cinematic, and collaborative skills to bring the narrative to life before filming begins. This includes the ability to transform a script into sequential images that convey emotion and pacing, as well as strong drawing skills to quickly capture scenes, characters, and environments.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Resilience, curiosity, and authenticity are essential qualities for any artist. The artistic journey is seldom straightforward; it is often marked by rejection, creative blocks, and financial instability.

Resilience empowers artists to persevere through challenges, learn from failures, and adapt to changing circumstances while remaining dedicated to their craft, even in times of obscurity. Curiosity drives artists to continually explore new techniques, genres, and perspectives, fostering growth and keeping their work dynamic and engaging.

Authenticity, on the other hand, is crucial for establishing a genuine connection with audiences. While some may opt for AI-generated art, true artistry lies in the personal touch of an artist’s hand, the unique strokes of ink, and the vibrant colors on canvas. This authenticity not only builds trust but also distinguishes an artist’s work, ensuring it resonates on a deeper level. Ultimately, these qualities are not merely traits; they are skills that, when exercised, strengthen an artist’s journey and enhance their creative expression.

And my best advice for upcoming artists, trust in God, embrace authenticity and originality in your life; make your voice heard in a world that often stifles individuality. Channel the spirit of a graffiti artist, unafraid to express themselves boldly in the dead of night. Be true to yourself and let your uniqueness shine.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

As a young teenager who lost my father to cancer during my childhood, I found that my faith in God played a crucial role in overcoming significant challenges and reaching my current position. Graduating from high school made it clear that navigating life’s pressures from family, friends, and self cannot be done in isolation. My mother’s unwavering faith inspired me to turn to God for support during difficult times.

The values and work ethic I possess were instilled in me by my parents, who were hardworking immigrants from Argentina and Lithuania, especially my father who came from a worn torn country. They set high expectations for my achievements, emphasizing that in the United States, there are no excuses for not striving for excellence.

However, distractions such as social media and the pursuit of likes can hinder our progress. I challenge you to disconnect from your phone for a day and truly engage with life around you.
