We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anthony Tagliavia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Earlier in my dance career I had multiple injuries to different body parts for a stretch of 3 years. It was a grueling reoccuring process that was affecting my progress as a dancer and ultimately my happiness as a person . Fortunately I continued to look into ways to strengthen, stretch and learn recovery techniques that have thankfully prevented me from injuring myself since. This process taught me how to seek out potential solutions for current problems.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hi my name is Anthony Tagliavia. I am a breakdancer from Brooklyn, New York. I go by my dance name Bboy Rise. I currently run my own breakdance program called “illstylez Crew”. I am currently working on throwing my second kids breakdance competition called “Style On Em’ 2” which is happening February 10th, 2024.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First and foremost my biggest quality is to always be a student of your craft. I am always in the process of working on areas of weakness and trying to expand my body in multiple ways. Whether it be expanding old stretches and movements or learning new ones, expanding your mind and body is key . Secondly , being highly adaptable is very important as you become more successful in your field of expertise. Many problems will arise on your road to success and you have to make changes and adjustments to solve life’s puzzles. Lastly put the pride aside. Not everything is about you. Most of the time it’s about the people you work with and how you can help people make improvements with the skills you learned throughout overcoming your personal obstacles.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most important thing my parents did for me was instilling faith in God. My faith is everything and without my lord and savior Jesus Christ I wouldn’t have overcome what I did. When life gets tough I rely on God. When life feels good I thank God.
