Meet Antonello Bonci

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Antonello Bonci a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Antonello, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

One thing that I love about the U.S is the tremendous amount of diversity. Nothing would scare me more than being in a room of people who are too similar to me. I have learned in the last 30 years as a neuroscientist that appearance is very often deceiving, and for this reason, when I am surrounded by people who are culturally, and ethnically different from me helps me grow a tremendous amount. Furthermore, it makes me appreciate that in the end we are all trying to help each other and to be the best version of ourselves, no matter our cultural or ethical background.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Since childhood, I aspired to become a physician to help people. As a teenager, my interest shifted specifically to understanding how the brain works and why people behave in certain ways. This passion led me to pursue a residency in neurology and become a neuroscientist immediately after medical school.

Years of research culminated in a groundbreaking discovery in 2013, where my team identified the science behind using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to help those struggling with addictions. Today, I am proud that our clinics in both the U.S. and Europe are globally recognized for their expertise in applying TMS to a range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, and addictions.

While I practice medicine exclusively in Italy, I cherish spending time at our clinics, and meeting incredible individuals from around the world. Recently, we expanded to the West Coast with new locations in Newport Beach and Beverly Hills, in addition to our presence on the East Coast. My greatest dream is to make TMS accessible to everyone who needs it so that more people can benefit from this remarkable technology.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I have never been afraid of working and studying hard, I still study every day. I am also very patient and once I set a goal for myself I relentlessly pursue it. Do not give up! We all stumble and make mistakes but what defines us in our success is our ability to learn from our mistakes and overcome any obstacle without losing faith in our dreams and objectives.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

We are in constant expansion, both in the U.S and in Europe. and all of our newest clinics are created in partnership with the best healthcare professionals in the sector. This is why we are open to forming partnerships with more and more therapists and clinicians. We have seen countless times that Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is most effective when our patients receive comprehensive, clinical support.
