Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Antonio Heath Jr.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Antonio, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I developed my confidence and self esteem mainly from my parents. They have always told me stories about their lives and I could tell they were very confident people. My mother was a straight A student who tap danced and played violin. My father was an all star athlete. Both are successful entrepreneurs today in different fields but the work on self improvement remained the same. I pattern myself after them in that way.
I also have to credit being involved in sports like karate and baseball. These sports helped a lot with self esteem when learning discipline, playing to your strengths, and teamwork. Knowing you don’t have to be in the spotlight but you could be the one aiming the spotlight. Both are equally important. Be true to your role. And be open minded to it changing as you mature as well.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Antonio Heath Jr and I am a Performing Artist (Dance), Barber, and aspiring Fashion Designer. My first love out of the three was dance. I’ve been dancing for 16 years, 11 of those have been within the community performing, competing nationally, and teaching.
The mission is to show the culture in its purest form to those who don’t understand it so they can learn to. Even before that it was to inspire everyone who’s watching that it’s possible to live your dreams and serve your community at the same time.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Learn how to fish. Play your strength in a team setting. Find comfort in solitude.
I say learn how to fish as a figure of speech. Don’t always rely on others to feed you. Learn how to feed yourself. Being too dependent can stunt your growth.
When you’re on a team, each one covers the other. If someone’s weak in an area then those who have that strength take over and vice versa. World is not that heavy if we lift together.
Solitude can help you digest what you have learned and reflect on where you need to improve. We get clouded judgement when too many outside thoughts push our own thoughts out making it hard to be more decisive. Give yourself time to process next time a decision needs to be made. The silence will get louder.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth has been in trusting myself more and learning how to apply what I already have in a more effective way as opposed to always searching for something new. Today could be the day you give 100% and some sees it who can make that dream you have come true. Or you can be that for them being your most authentic self. You never know who you come across in life that’s a blessing. Trust your walk.
