Meet Antwan Lawshe

We were lucky to catch up with Antwan Lawshe recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Antwan, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

I believe my optimism comes from the “What If?” mindset mixed with a healthy dose of belief in my own ideas. Understanding that things can take time and having good creative sounding boards around you will keep you motivated to get that next project out because what if that’s the one that gives you the opportunity you’ve been looking for.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a director, screenwriter, and a creative mind. My focus is creating and bringing my own stories to life through filmmaking whether they be based in fiction or not. What i find special about this art form is the ability to share stories that resonate and can even potentially change the way people think but ultimately it’s the feeling of escape they have brought me that means the most. That moment where you can step in a theater or turn on a movie and for the next 90 to 120 minutes not be worried about what else you got going on means something to me. Being inspired by this visual medium also has lended to me having an eye for visual composition, world building and appealing to specific audiences based on subject matter, so i often find myself also using my skills to creative direct and for commercial work.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think three qualities that have been most impactful for me in my journey thus far are, creativity, communication, and charisma. For folks on their journey i say having these are key and here’s why, for creativity it should be obvious, you got to have the ideas, but you also have to be able to communicate those ideas and if you add some charisma to how you communicate these ideas you can get people to believe in them too.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

My number one obstacle right now is getting out of my own way. I can get very hung up in the idea of how i think things are supposed to look and when they don’t look that way i can get disappointed and discouraged causing me to waste time or sit on projects for longer than i should. Realizing i just need to get the work out and keep building has been the most beneficial for me and I’m working on moving on that mindset.
