We recently connected with Anu The Deity and have shared our conversation below.
ANU, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
For me, creativity is the ultimate currency. A lot of artists find themselves in situations where their creativity is controlled, and that’s the quickest way to kill it. So, the first rule I live by is to never let anyone control my creativity. It’s important to protect that.
The second key to staying creative is maintaining a positive mindset. We all know how tough it can be to thrive in the world today—there’s so much stress, negativity, and chaos. But to be truly creative, you have to find positivity, even in difficult times. Stress and creativity don’t mix. For me, it’s about transmuting those negative situations into something beneficial.
My career was born out of pain, suffering, and depression. I’ve learned the art of transmutation—turning negativity into something inspiring. When I’m in a good mood, I’m inspired. When I’m in a bad mood, I channel that energy into my work, creating music that connects with others. I don’t view negative situations as bad anymore. They provide new inspiration, new perspectives, and opportunities to relate to others on a deeper level.
Staying connected to trends and culture is also important. But ultimately, creativity comes from turning life’s experiences—good and bad—into something that resonates with others. That’s how I keep my creativity alive.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My story begins in Fall River, Massachusetts, a small town in the 508. I’ve always had a love for hip-hop and the music industry, starting out offering graphic design, music marketing, and management services before launching my own music career in 2017. Fast forward to now, living in Los Angeles, I’ve grown both personally and professionally. I’ve been blessed with opportunities to start a podcast, perform on stages across the East and West coasts, and launch an event company, even going on tour in the same year. My goal is to elevate my city, my people, and myself through my authentic self-expression.
As a recording artist, the most exciting part of the process is creating a record. It starts with the inspiration I feel when hearing an instrumental, which helps me tap into a frequency that becomes the foundation of the track. From there, the process becomes a beautiful puzzle to solve, from production to mastering, and finally sharing it with friends, family, and the world. The excitement doesn’t stop there—I get to design my own cover art as a graphic designer, and I’m constantly exploring creative ways to market each project.
On the professional side, my label BKOSEASON is working on the 2025 BKOfest tour, with an exciting new international stop we’ll be revealing soon. We’ve also expanded our services, offering blog write-ups to help artists trend higher on search engines alongside our existing Instagram promotion, Spotify playlisting, and graphic design services. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three most important qualities that shaped my journey are a go-getter attitude, the ability to market and brand effectively, and having faith in the process.
First, having a go-getter attitude is essential. In today’s music industry, with millions of songs uploaded daily, if you’re not relentlessly pushing forward, you’ll get outworked and drowned out by the noise. You can’t just wait for success—you have to go after it.
Second, marketing and branding are crucial skills. No matter how talented you are, if you don’t know how to market yourself or make your brand stand out, you won’t break through. You need to have a strong and unique marketing plan to differentiate yourself from the masses.
Lastly, having faith in the process is key. The music industry is unpredictable and cutthroat. Deals fall through, support wanes, and setbacks are inevitable. But if you have unwavering faith in yourself and the journey, you’ll be able to weather the ups and downs.
For those just starting out, my advice is simple: put in your 10,000 hours. Focus on improving your craft every single day. Until you’ve truly put in the work and developed a high-quality product, nothing else matters. Master your craft first, then worry about the rest.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I believe it’s better to go all-in on your strengths first. When you’re naturally good at something, leaning into that and putting in your 10,000 hours is key. Mastering your strengths sets a solid foundation. Once you’ve achieved mastery in one area, you can expand and work on other skills to become more well-rounded.
For example, my music career started with my strengths in management, graphic design, and marketing. When I shifted to becoming a recording artist, I had to teach myself how to make music, which took time. While other artists might have started with a musical advantage, I had an edge in understanding the business and branding side. Now that I’ve put in my hours and developed my music craft, I’m more well-rounded and a bigger threat in this industry. Currently, I’m focusing on the financial aspects, as being independent is expensive, but my foundation is solid. So, start with your strengths, master them, and then branch out.
