We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anupam Shobhakar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anupam below.

Hi Anupam, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

Born into a musical family where the art holds deep significance, I was encouraged from an early age to pursue music professionally. My passion for music was ignited after witnessing performances by great artists such as John McLaughlin, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, and others, which inspired me to work even harder. With the guidance of exceptional teachers, I dedicated myself to continuous practice, striving to become a better musician and began performing at a very early age.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I have a deep background in the Senia Maihar Gharana, training under Shree Suresh Vyas, a disciple of Smt. Annapurna Devi, and Ustad Aashish Khan. After performing globally on the Sarod, I embarked on a new journey, developing an Indian Classical repertoire for the fretless guitar, blending techniques from traditional instruments and Sarangi vocal nuances. Over the past year, my performances on this instrument have been met with great enthusiasm.

With both Eastern and Western music shaping my life, I’ve pursued non-Indian music alongside my classical roots. In NYC, I expanded my musical vocabulary, composing for string quartets, jazz ensembles, and forming a progressive metal duo. My latest project is a global crossover album, Liquid Reality, featuring world-class multidisciplinary musicians.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three skills I take great pride in are my voracious appetite for knowledge, dedication to improving my craft, and unwavering professionalism. My relentless pursuit of knowledge and commitment to growth led me to blend Eastern and Western cultures, culminating in the creation of an instrument that bridges both worlds. For me, learning Western music has always been just as vital as absorbing Eastern traditions, ensuring that my artistry reflects a balance of both. influences.

Listen, learn, absorb, travel, stay open-minded, and always be respectful. Take the time to truly understand your chosen instrument and continuously refine your craft. Stay aware of the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry, adapt to changes, and never stop growing as an artist.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My parents instilled in me a deep passion for music, a strong work ethic, and the tools needed to pursue a challenging profession. They provided a nurturing learning environment while fostering self-belief and confidence, which have been essential to my journey.
