Meet April Heffner

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful April Heffner. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with April below.

Hi April, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

My work ethic comes from a desire to grow. I’ve always been driven by the idea of improving a little every day, so I’ve built habits around discipline, follow-through, and learning from challenges.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

“Hi! I’m April, and I’m the creator behind Onyx and Arrow Collective. My work centers around cinematic wedding artistry through photography and videography.
.
What excites me most about what I do is blending storytelling with design, transforming emotions into visuals and creating pieces that make people feel seen. I love the process of turning an idea into something people can connect with, whether that’s through photography, videography or the experience surrounding it.

One thing I really want people to know about my work is that [your philosophy or mission — e.g., everything is handcrafted, each piece has a story, my art is hand crafted and designed to tell each couples’ love story the way it deserves to be remembered – their way. I put a lot of intention into every project, and my goal is always to create something meaningful, not just something beautiful.

As for what’s new, I’m excited to share that Onyx and Arrow Collective is evolving into what I envision as the strongest, most authentic version of the brand yet. This next chapter is something I’ve been building quietly for a while, and I can’t wait for people to experience what’s coming.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Consistency
Showing up—especially on the days when motivation wasn’t there—made the biggest difference. Consistency allowed my skills, ideas, and brand to grow steadily over time.

2. Adaptability
Creative journeys rarely follow a straight line. Being willing to evolve, experiment, and course-correct helped me stay aligned with my vision while still embracing growth.

3. Self-trust
Believing in my own ideas and timing—even when others couldn’t see the full picture—was essential. Self-trust helped me make decisions that felt true to me and my brand.

My advice: Give yourself permission to move at your own pace. Create space to listen to your intuition, and don’t ignore the things that excite you—they’re usually pointing you in the right direction.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was create a sense of safety while still pushing me to grow. I always knew I had a place to land, even when I was taking risks or figuring out who I was. That balance of support and freedom shaped my confidence, my work ethic, and my belief that I could build a life that looked different from the one they had.
