Meet April Ruiz

We were lucky to catch up with April Ruiz recently and have shared our conversation below.

April, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.

My initial reaction to this question is that I’ve never truly ‘mastered’ overcoming burnout. There have definitely been times when I’ve ‘crashed’ due to overcommitting. I recall one instance where I hit a mental block, and another where my mobility was limited because my joints had stiffened. Since then, I’ve become more intentional about taking better care of myself. Right now, I’m in a ‘selfish’ season, where I’m prioritizing my well-being and engaging in activities and with people that nourish key areas of my life: spiritual growth, physical health, social connection, emotional safety, and intellectual stimulation. I’ve also gotten better at protecting my time, which I now see as one of my most valuable assets. I believe the key to avoiding burnout is managing your capacity—knowing when not to overcommit and staying attuned to your energy levels.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m the owner and lead of Mosaic Masterminds, an educational support services company that offers a variety of services. We provide tutoring in multiple subjects for learners of all ages, from early childhood through adulthood. Our partners include individual families, school districts, and youth-focused afterschool programs. In addition to tutoring, we offer professional development support, helping individuals enhance their work-related skills. We also provide translation and interpretation services in seven languages.

What sets Mosaic Masterminds apart is the diversity we bring to the table—not just in the team’s backgrounds, but in our skills and services. When people think of our brand, we want them to remember that we are a team that values diverse perspectives and experiences, and that we offer a wide range of services to meet the needs of our clients.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The first quality that stands out for me is perseverance. I’ve faced numerous challenges throughout my life, from a young age and well into adulthood, but I’ve never given up on my personal, academic, or professional pursuits. I hope to serve as a positive example for others who may feel compromised in their journey but still have the drive to succeed.

Secondly, having a solid support system is essential. I truly believe that without the care and encouragement of relatives, friends, peers, colleagues, teachers, professors, and community leaders, I wouldn’t be where I am today. You never know how your actions or words might influence someone, so it’s important to remain mindful of how you impact others—people are always watching, learning, and being affected by what you do and say.

Lastly, for anyone striving to make a difference, my advice is to stay focused on your mission. Keep your goals and your ‘why’ at the forefront of your mind. It’s easy to get sidetracked or discouraged, but staying true to your purpose will keep you grounded and motivated in the face of obstacles.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

As a child, I was very confident in my abilities, both in and out of the classroom, and I credit much of that to my strong support system, which always encouraged me in all my endeavors. However, as I entered college, I began to question whether I was truly ‘cut out’ for some of the pursuits I had in mind. This doubt has lingered into adulthood, particularly when I catch myself comparing my journey to others based on their success, accomplishments, and possessions.

The challenge I face is managing those comparisons and staying focused on my own path. My advice to myself—and to others who share similar struggles—is to stay centered on your own growth. You never know the challenges or sacrifices someone else has faced to reach their apparent success. At the end of the day, it’s not a competition. It’s about staying true to your unique journey and embracing the lessons you learn along the way.
