Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Arella Devorah. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Arella, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
There is a book I read called The Artist Way, and it talks about taking yourself on a “Artist Date” each week. Since reading that book, I’ve worked on implementing some of the author’s practices as much as possible. Artist dates are some of my favorite things to do, because it allows you to connect with just yourself and your inner artist. Music is the form of art I am most passionate about, but I also love to allow myself to explore my creativity in other forms such as drawing, painting, photography, etc.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I love singing and want to focus on creating more music that is beautiful and resonates with my listeners. I love exploring different sounds and finding styles that align with who I am as an artist. I just released a new cover called “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak that is posted to my Instagram. Singing this song really allowed me to express who I am as an artist. I am excited to share this new piece with my audience.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say perseverance, belief in yourself, and ability to take calculated risks. Not everybody around you is going to be pushing you to be your best self as an artist, so you have to believe in yourself first and surround yourself with others who inspire you and want you to grow. There will be a lot of obstacles along the way also, so it is important to stay optimistic and continue being yourself despite your circumstances. Sometimes there isn’t a clearly defined path to follow, so you have to allow yourself to take calculated risks and trust the process.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I would say my ability to trust others again. When I first moved to Los Angeles, I began to struggle with my ability to trust others. Which was completely reasonable due to the experiences I encountered when I first moved here. However, now I have developed a stronger ability to vet the people in my life and set boundaries. Because of this I am able to eliminate those who aren’t right for me and leave room for people who treat me with respect.
