We recently connected with Ariana Solis Gomez and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ariana, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I was born and raised in Mexico, and moving to the U.S. was a cultural shock. As an immigrant, I’ve personally experienced the barriers that many in our community face, from language challenges to limited access to resources and opportunities. This journey has fueled my commitment to uplift and amplify the voices of those who often go unheard or feel overlooked.
Throughout my career, I’ve dedicated myself to working on projects that support underserved communities, whether it’s through communications, advocacy, or helping organizations connect with diverse populations. This has become my driving force. Now, with my businesses, Unconventional Tactics and Second Labels, I hope to continue this work in new and innovative ways—whether it’s through empowering women to build sustainable incomes or ensuring that companies are communicating authentically with the communities they serve. My purpose is to uplift and create pathways for others, and I’m committed to doing so in everything I do.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m the proud founder of two businesses that represent my passions and values. My first business, Unconventional Tactics, is a strategic communications firm where I help companies connect with their audiences in authentic and meaningful ways. What sets us apart is our focus on strategy, multicultural understanding, and bridging the gap between internal cultures and external consumer demands. My background in multicultural communications has given me the tools to help brands navigate today’s complex cultural landscape.
Then there’s my second venture, Second Labels, which I’m incredibly excited about. Second Labels is all about sustainable fashion and community. We offer both pop-up and online consignment services where people can sell their pre-loved items and make extra money, all while contributing to an eco-friendly and resourceful lifestyle. What makes it special is the sense of community we foster and how we empower women to make an income by decluttering their closets. It’s fashion with a purpose, and I’m proud to say we’re growing.
As for what’s new, I’m thrilled to announce the launch of our online consignment service, which makes it even easier for people to participate. Whether you’re in Nashville or beyond, you can now consign with us without ever leaving your home. We handle everything from item pick-up to selling, offering a completely hassle-free experience.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, the three qualities that have been most impactful are resilience, cultural empathy, and adaptability.
1. Resilience: Starting two businesses wasn’t easy, especially after leaving behind a stable, successful career. But resilience helped me push through those moments of doubt and fear. My advice? Understand that setbacks are part of the process. Don’t let them define you; instead, let them strengthen you. Building resilience is about being willing to take risks and learn from every experience, even the tough ones.
2. Empathy: As someone born and raised in Mexico and having spent years navigating life in the U.S., I’ve seen firsthand the importance of understanding diverse perspectives. This skill has been vital, especially in my communications career and with Second Labels. I always try to look at things from different angles and consider how diverse backgrounds shape people’s views. If you’re early in your journey, focus on actively listening and learning from others with different life experiences.
3. Adaptability: My career took a major pivot when I transitioned from working in large organizations to starting my own businesses. Being able to adapt, learn new things quickly, and adjust my strategies has been key to success. To improve this skill, embrace change instead of resisting it. Seek out new challenges, stay curious, and be open to evolving your vision as you grow.
Representation matters deeply to me, and I hope to inspire other Latinas to start their own businesses. We are a driving force but continue to be underrepresented in many industries. By stepping into these spaces and showcasing our talents, we not only pave the way for ourselves but also for future generations. Embrace your unique perspective, and don’t be afraid to make your mark.
For anyone starting, my advice is to invest in yourself. Focus on building your resilience, understanding diverse perspectives, and staying adaptable. These qualities will guide you through both successes and challenges, helping you make a meaningful impact in your field while honoring your own journey and contributions.
