Meet Arica Rucker

We were lucky to catch up with Arica Rucker recently and have shared our conversation below.

Arica, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

My Success and being effective is still a work in progress! However, It all begins with my faith and a level of confidence that I’ve inherited. We are all born with unique gifts, one of mine just happens to be the gift of discernment. With that, I’ve learned to read a room. Or, should I say people in the room. I am not always quick to engage which could be intimidating to some, but to be effective you have to learn who you are around.

I’ve recently gained the title as being the first African American female to own a Century 21 franchise. A powerhouse real estate company with only 1% minorities,..talk about being the only one in a room who looks like me. Because of my unwavering faith, I am so comfortable and genuine in who I am, that I feel it helps people feel comfortable around me.

It is the confidence I’ve been given, from the one who promise me the success I will have.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a wife, mother of 2, but most of all a child of God. I am an owner of a real estate firm with 30 agents and growing. I am a board member for a community daycare, and member of NAREB and Realtor Association. I hold various designations in my field of real estate.

I did not choose to be an agent, it chose me! However, I have enjoyed every minute of it, I especially enjoyed watching people realize their dream of homeownership. I have enjoyed all the people and friends I have met and made along the way. And all the people I’ve helped and the communities I’ve made better.

We started this event called “Taking it to the Streets” where we go out and meet o members of our community, whether it be a school, fire department, police department, etc. taking lunch, sharing info, and we are open to coming to a place near you.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Adaptability
Patience
Integrity
The industry that I serve change all the time. You have to be able to pivot and roll with the changes. You have to stay educated and have a sense of determination and understanding along the way. What we do is more than selling homes. We help people realize a dream and it can be an emotional roller coaster for some. Having the highest level of integrity is everything and will take you a long way. That’s why you can’t be motivated only by money. The reward has to be greater and self fulfilling.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Feeling overwhelmed happens more often than not in my role. I wear many hats, so when I feel stressed or overwhelmed, I do a few things to help. I take a 7 minute break to just clear my mind, some times I take a walk, or read the Bible or a book. Sometimes I take some deep breaths, but one of the main things I do is make a list of everything I need to get done and prioritize it in order of importance.; numbering the items on the list with 1 being most important, 2 would be somewhat, and 3 could be something that I could either delegate, or it can wait until later.
