Meet Ariel Lowell

We were lucky to catch up with Ariel Lowell recently and have shared our conversation below.

Ariel, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

From a young age, I was always interested in performing arts, broadway, singing, and the spotlight. Maybe that’s my natural born confidence, or the double Aries in me, but I have always loved how affected someone can be from a song, dance, or even a speech. I am so deeply affected by the dedication and conviction in a performer, to the point of an emotional outpour. How it feels to me, the audience, the way music tells a story, and even how it feels to be that person, changing so many lives just by confidently standing in front of everyone and doing what they’re most passionate about. Call me a dreamer, but like many other people, I would always imagine what it would be like to creatively hold space for a large group of people and affect them so deeply and vulnerably.

I don’t think that is something you can learn, I believe this is something you naturally feel in your soul. On top of this coming naturally to me, I find a deep interest in going inward, learning about myself, a yogic mindset, and how self love and self study can truly enhance your life by being unafraid to get to know yourself on a deeper lever. I am unafraid to look in the mirror, point out my wrongs, discover new ways of thinking, stepping into vulnerability, and truly being curious and excited about what is around me.

With all of that, being the only one in the room, guiding a space, tapping into vulnerability, and being empathetic to those around me is truly my love language. I have always had a natural born ability to stand in my power, and have learned to strengthen, soften, ebb, and flow through each experience so that they are uniquely their own and filled with compassion.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Right now I am completely and totally focused on rebuilding my business in LA. I am a sugaring specialist, or how I like to call it – a sugarista. Sugaring is a natural alternative to wax made of just sugar, water, and lemon juice, with gentle removal technique benefits. I have been sugaring for 10 years, and ran my own business for 5 in San Diego. Although I don’t believe in being a master at anything due to there is always something new to learn, I am a specialist in the industry and am passionate about the freedom, connection, and ease it has brought to my life. I am even more passionate about the way the results and the experience in the treatment room effects a client, and how it can enhance there life is many ways that one.

In January 2024 I decided to close the gap between my long distance relationship, move to LA, and start my business all over again. I knew that if I could do it once and be as booked and busy as I was, I could do it again. I am so lucky to have so much support not only from my sugaring community on social media, but from my clients as well. Though a big leap, there hasn’t been one person that didn’t think I’d be a success in LA, so I thought why not, and embark on my next adventure.

It is surprising how little sugaring there is in LA as compared to San Diego, and I’m so happy to bring this elevated form of hair removal to the scene. What I get most excited about though is creating a very well rounded experience for my clients in the treatment room. From the way we communicate, connect, and the little details that are included in and around the appointment are what truly set me apart from other sugaring professionals. I have a massive amount of empathy and mindfulness towards my clients, and am passionate about celebrating their ability to celebrate themselves, grasp onto their self love and take the time out of their day to do something for themselves that enhances their lives in so many ways. From saying good bye to your razor, smoother, finer and softer hair growth, ingrown reduction, and no longer having to deal with razor burn and irritation are just a few amazing things that sugar can do to make everyday worry free and more convenient.

I have a lot of hopes and dreams, especially because I was at the point to take the next step just before moving. It was an interesting turn of events, but I put love before work and I am so glad that I did. I would absolutely love to have a storefront, and offer sugaring in a chic setting that also offers events and community, which is what I truly am passionate about. I’ve got some other things in the works too so stay tuned for more!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. I think a really important quality or mindset that I carry in my business is that I know that I am not for everyone and everyone is not for me. And with that – I also know that each and every one of us has our own magic. Having the ability to be unattached to who comes and who doesn’t come to get an appointment is none of my concern. If I worried about who wasn’t coming to their appointments, or who came and never came back, I wouldn’t have the energy to focus on those who do come in monthly and are dedicated to their appointments. I believe that your vibe attracts your tribe, and I am so grateful for the clients that have magnetized to my business. The connection is authentic, strong, and special.

2. A skill that changed the game for me was being able to confidently, and matter of factly respect my own policies. As a small business owner, it’s scary to enforce policies, say no, and charge cancellation fees. But if bigger businesses can do it, so can we. In the esthetic industry, most of the time the money we make depends on if the client shows up. So if the client no shows after they signed an agreement about the policies, then the fact is that this is a business. Once I removed emotion and went full business mode about my policies, my clients not only respected me more, but it weeded out the clients that didn’t. For me, it’s all about quality over quantity. If I show up for your appointment, then you should too. And if you can’t come, that’s totally fine! But if the policy is not respected then that isn’t an energy I want in my space. Time is precious.

3. I love so much that I have a yogic background and can apply a lot of what I’ve learned about myself to those that I hold space for. Having done multiple trainings and retreats, yoga as a regular practice, and understanding the many benefits of self study, I have been able to shed that light on my clientele and be their ultimate hype girl. So appointments aren’t just hair removal, they are recognition and celebration of each individual client for who they are.

When it comes to esthetics, empathy and mindfulness are everything – for yourself and your client. You are the most important person in the room just as much as your client is the most important person in the room. I think the best way to improve on this mindset and these skills is to get to know yourself, learn to heal, call yourself out, understand that you are not an expert but always a student. You will always have something to learn and so finding inspiration from those around you and releasing the thought that others are competition will help to enhance your work and personal life.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I am always looking to collaborate. From wellness to food to beauty events, I would love to help facilitate events that display self love and self care. Find me on instagram @bloomsugaring or simply email me at [email protected].
