We caught up with the brilliant and insightful aryy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
aryy, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I used to be very insecure and shy growing up, especially when it came to my craft. Something that helped me immensely in the beginning was posting Youtube videos and getting validation from strangers. I know that sounds counter productive but it helped. And then to get out of that mindset of needing validation from strangers what helped me the most was honestly therapy.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve been playing and singing and writing for over years now and ever since I started I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Even though I had some hiccups on the way (aka going to college for something else because of societal pressure) I found myself again mid 20s and decided to live for me and focus on my music. I’m currently releasing singles for my upcoming debut album and I’m very excited about it. I felt really complete releasing my previous ukulele EPs and I’m super excited to be exploring a different, darker pop sound in my new upcoming music.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the most important one is letting go of the fear of being cringe. Nowadays everything is cringy, people make it seem like it’s embarrassing to be trying to do something, and it’s not. Let go of that and free yourself. Secondly I’d say, let go of the need for perfection. I see many people who want to start posting videos etc and don’t because they don’t have the perfect equipment with the perfect background with the perfect sound and everything. It doesn’t need to be perfect, just do it.
Finally I’d say, remember to live. I’m constantly trying to remind myself of that. We’re part of a grind culture society and all that does is lead is to burnout. Take a moment, breathe, touch grass. As my therapist always says: rest is productive.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Tale Of The Unknown Island by José Saramago played a big part in my life. I read it when I first moved to the USA from my home country, Brazil, to follow my music dreams. It was a gift from a dear friend and I read it in one sitting on the NYC subway. Trying to translate this one phrase that says ” I want to find the unknown island, I want to know who I am when I’m there”. This phrase spoke to me. Just like the main character in the book, I was searching for my unknown island, searching for this far away dream. I left my degrees behind, left my previous life behind, and moved in search of this unknown and wanting to find out who I’d be when I find it, feeling this longing for this version of me that I had yet to meet. People say you have to be 1 in a million to “make it”, people say there are no more unknown islands. It doesn’t matter and won’t stop me from searching.
