We were lucky to catch up with Arii Sahi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Arii, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
For self care I do so many things like take myself on dates, form a routine, do skincare, have a cup of tea, etc. . It allows me to show up for myself in multiple ways, getting proper rest and relaxation helps me to gain energy to do all my tasks and build strong trust with myself. After a night where I take a bubble bath and have a cup of tea I make a new routine for myself to make sure that I am doing the best I can and if something isn’t working I change it. Creating a new routine when things aren’t working is a form of self-care for me, as it reflects my trust in myself to find ways to show up and support my well-being. I may not always feel like showing up everyday but I do because it allows me to hold myself accountable.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a multifaceted individual, a true definition of a jack of all trades. I work in alternative education full time, while also becoming certified to be a substance abuse counselor. I am also a part time travel agent and a full time content creator. I love what I do because everyday is different, I learn so much from my students daily and I get to teach them just as much but I also take on more roles than just an educator. I am their counselor, mentor, and motivator. I get to hear their stories which can bring me to tears but watching them grow through their hardships and become better people every year makes the stress they put me through totally worth it. They have inspired me to become a substance abuse counselor specifically for adolescents, because I want to be able to support them the way they deserve when they choose to be vulnerable with me. Everyday I wake up I feel motivated to go to work to help them incorporate small things that encourage them to progress towards their full potential. I go on walks everyday during my lunch break and the kids have noticed, now inspiring them to start walking everyday during their group time. They put in the work to prioritize themselves by finding things that support their mental health and motivate them. They’ve done so well this school year with showing up everyday and doing their work, it keeps me in check for the days I slack with my content, my education, or my travel agency tasks. With that, I’ve been working towards turning my blog, Clueless Babes, into a podcast. I want it to feel much more personal and interconnected so I am hoping hearing my voice and seeing my face will help to do that.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three skills I feel are most impactful in my journey is discipline, flexibility, grace and a bonus word patience! Being disciplined is important because it maintains focus for your goal rather than how you feel in the moment. I believe you have to be disciplined enough to get up and go to the gym though it’s cold outside and you’d much rather be in your blanket. You have to be disciplined to show up everyday to film, edit, and post your content. You have to be disciplined enough to show up everyday for yourself to better yourself! Flexibility is meaningful because sometimes things don’t work out the way we want and we have to be able to adapt based on the way we respond to certain situations. We as individuals have to make sure we’re able to pivot when our world comes crashing down or things just don’t turn out as expected. Grace is an important quality because often times we can be so hard on ourselves when we’re tired or mess up on something, but beating ourselves up about it does NOT help us in any way! You can be honest with yourself without putting yourself down and many people don’t know the difference. Give yourself grace for a mistake you made when you didn’t know any better, give yourself grace for being tired, give yourself grace for failing. We all get tired, we all fail at some point, and we all make mistakes! I have to tell my friends that it’s not the end all be all because you’re tired or you messed up or failed. Those are all good things! Being tired is listening to you body and mind saying it needs rest. Failing means you’re on the right path to success! Making mistakes means you’re learning! Lastly my bonus word, patience! To all my young folks out there who are on social media feeling like they are behind in life, you are not! Everyone has their own path in life, plus you have no idea what some people are doing to get that high rise apartment and Lamborghini. You have no idea what type of debt they are in or what position they had to put themselves in to get that. I remember working as a manager at Finishline working open to close for 2 weeks straight just to keep the store afloat and make sure I had a job. I was extremely tired and stressed to the point where I’d get in my car everyday after work and take off my shoes and sit for 10 minutes just for my legs to not swell as much. Finally I started to put myself first and left the job for my wellbeing. To think that was only 2 years ago when I quit and how far I’ve come now is crazy. My point is I felt like I was behind. I was at a job I once loved but grew out of, I was stressed and had nothing under my name but my beat up Acura that I wasn’t sure if it would last me to my next destination. I just gotten sued out of $6,000 and was super disappointed with where I was in my life. All my counterparts were having fun in college and jumpstarting their careers while I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I started substitute teaching just to try something new and my mom often did it while I was in school. I fell in love with building a bond with many kids and creating teacher friends. I decided that’s something I can do full time while doing content creation. Little did I know that both my content creation and love for education would take me, a southern girl, to the Northeast to live out my wildest dreams. So once again, remember to be patient. What is for you will not miss you, and if you don’t know what you want to do, try different things until you fall in love with something that speaks to your soul. Take risk and have faith!
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth for the past 12 months is self awareness. I haven’t always been super disciplined or motivated or even patient. I have had to hold myself accountable and forced myself to learn discipline, patience, and grace to simply just take my time. I wasn’t always the person I am today and honestly I am not close to the person I TRULY want to be. I know I have potential to be a great person all around. I can hit the gym 6 days a week and always look put together, always have the most aesthetically pleasing content, and be one of the most inspirational people to my students but right now that’s not who I am and that’s okay! I know I am working to become that better version of myself every chance I get and that’s all that matters. I am aware of who I was, who I am today, and who I want to become. I will continue to work on that.
