Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Arisbeth Gutierrez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Arisbeth , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Growing up in a Hispanic household, my father instilled in me the importance of hard work and determination. He demonstrated this through his own actions, constantly learning and tackling various projects. We affectionately refer to him as “Geppetto” due to his knack for fixing and building things. From him, I gained valuable lessons, including financial management, quality workmanship, and the importance of self-sufficiency. As his only daughter among four children, he wanted to ensure that I could take care of myself in any situation. Because I learned these things from him, I have been able to apply them to my life with my husband and children. I am always striving to improve where I can. And if others can be inspired by this through the attention to quality and hard work that goes into my small business and products, that makes it all worthwhile for me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
It all started with a round loom knit kit that I got from my mother when I was 18. I made a few things with it, but wasn’t particularly interested in the process. So I switched my focus to crocheting. After I had my first son, I crocheted a baby hat for him. For the next few years (and two babies later), my creations were inspired by my children. Socks, beanies, scarves and the like. While this remains to be a source of my artistic choice, I’ve also mixed in selections that I genuinely would just want to buy from someone or would want for my house. So you can say my work is pretty much a reflection of myself. After receiving suggestions over time from family and friends who took a liking to the things I make, I decided to explore joining the local markets. The most exciting part of all this, for me, would have to be the look on peoples faces when they find something that resonates with them or that they want to get for someone else as a gift. Thanks to all the support from family, friends, and other local vendors I have been receiving more and more positive feedback and demand for my work. I have events booked for May and June, and hope to continue to join my fellow small business owners, as we all try to bring something to be excited about in the local community.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have helped me on my journey would have to be my attention to detail, determination, and just the love and appreciation of crochet art. All of these things ultimately translate into my work. My advice for anyone starting out is to find a happy medium between challenging yourself and taking it easy when things get overwhelming. Stay true to your passion and let things happen as naturally as possible and the blessings will come!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My husband has been my biggest supporter. I’ve always been very much introverted, but having him around helping me with markets and giving his honest opinions when I ask has been the best help. He is constantly helping with the business side of things while I focus on crocheting. He has a background in business, so that definitely helps a lot. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have had the courage to make it to my first markets.
