Hi Arlene, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience came from a combination of life experiences, personal values and influences from people who have shaped my outlook on life. Facing and overcoming difficulties such as personal loss, financial struggles, health issues, career setbacks built the resiliency in me. Each challenge taught me how to cope with the stress that came with it and had to adapt to the changing circumstances. Strong relationships with family, friends and mentors provided emotional support and encouragement during tough times. My resilience came from my upbringing and childhood experiences and the influence of key role models such as my parents, teachers, friends. Growing up in an environment where perseverance and problem-solving helped me how to handle challenges. Staying calm, cool and collected was key for me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Real estate wasn’t something I initially planned on pursuing, but looking back, I realize it was the perfect path for me. Like many people, I began my career in a different industry, but I quickly discovered that the rigid 9-to-5 lifestyle didn’t align with my values or my long-term goals. I wanted more freedom—both in my schedule and in the way I impacted others’ lives.

The idea of real estate intrigued me because it offered a balance between flexibility and responsibility. I was drawn to the fact that real estate is all about people—helping them navigate one of the most significant financial and emotional decisions of their lives. Whether it’s helping a family find their dream home or assisting a couple in selling their property during a difficult time, like a divorce, I felt I could make a real difference.

So, I took the leap. I studied, got my license, and stepped into the world of real estate. In the early days, there were challenges, of course—learning the ins and outs of the market, finding clients, and managing my time effectively. But as I gained experience, I realized that every transaction taught me something new and made me a better realtor.

After working for a while, I decided to start my own real estate business. I wanted more control over my schedule, my income, and most importantly, how I served my clients. With my business, I can now provide a range of services—whether it’s buying or selling properties, property management, or relocation services—with a personal touch that reflects my values.

What I love most about being a realtor is the opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life, to help them through major transitions, and to be a part of such a meaningful moment in their lives. Real estate is not just about properties—it’s about building relationships, understanding people’s needs, and creating solutions that help them move forward.

I’m grateful every day for the freedom and fulfillment this career brings me, and I’m excited to continue growing in this industry while making a positive impact on those I work with.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Self-Motivation and Discipline
Real estate requires independent work, and success hinges on being proactive, managing your own time, and staying organized. Whether it’s generating leads, marketing properties, or keeping up with industry trends, self-motivation and discipline help you stay productive and achieve long-term goals, especially in a business where your income depends on your effort.

2. Empathy and Relationship-Building
Being able to connect with clients on a personal level is crucial in real estate. Empathy allows you to understand clients’ emotions and needs, whether they’re first-time buyers, sellers going through a life change, or investors seeking opportunities. Building trust and long-lasting relationships helps ensure repeat business and referrals, which are vital to long-term success in the industry.

3. Strong Communication Skills
Effective communication is essential in real estate. Realtors must clearly convey information to clients, negotiate deals, and collaborate with other professionals like inspectors and lenders. Active listening is also critical to understanding clients’ needs and ensuring a smooth transaction.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

I would not have the grit and hustle without the life lessons from my parents as immigrants from the Philippines. Growing up with humble beginnings has been an integral part of my journey, shaping who I am today and fueling my drive for success. I come from a background where resources were limited and opportunities were hard earned. However, this upbringing instilled in me invaluable lessons of resilience, determination and gratitude. It taught me the value of hard work and perseverance.
