We recently connected with Armani Borden and have shared our conversation below.
Armani, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
There are times throughout the day that I would have nothing to do. In those times I would sit on my bed and allow my mind to drift off into its imagination. This is where my creativity lies. While I am imagining a story, I start to create dialogue. Yes, that means I start talking to myself out loud as if I am actually holding a conversation with the characters. That is how I was able to come up with a lot of the scenes that you will find in my book. I act them out and put myself in my character’s shoes and come up with a scene that I would eventually write down and save it for when I get to that scene while writing. That is how I keep my creativity going, by talking to myself and imagining scenes as they play out in my head.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hello readers, my name is Armani Borden and I am the author of the Burean series. My goal is to become a full time writer and to write Christian fiction that is action packed, comedic and entertaining for all to enjoy. The Burean series is Christian inspired and tells a story about a world, Burea, that is how Earth should have been if Adam and Eve did not eat that fruit. But, of course, there has to be some conflict in order to make the story compelling. And that is what leads to the story of my main character, Tiana. She loses her father to a battle that tried to stop evil from entering into the world. But they weren’t 100% successful though her father succeeded in taking down the enemy and stopping the machine. But the enemy’s right hand man wants revenge and goes after Tiana and her family but her mother is not mentally there and her twin sister, Aliana is not cut out for the job so Tiana decides to step up to the plate and the series follows her journey as she becomes a secret agent, protects her family and works to bring her world back to its original state.
I truly believe that Christian stories does have potential in becoming entertaining and compelling to where not just Christians will enjoy it. And I strive to make that happen. There is fighting scenes, comedy, and a little bit of romance. And those are the type of books that I want to publish.
This series is the first of a few stories that I intend to write. Once I am finished I am going to start a short story series and write a novel but at the moment I am writing the fourth book out five. The current titles are “Burea: Time to Step Up”, “Burea: Going Undercover”, and “Burea: Battle for Love”.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One skill that I have obtained that I have found to be extremely helpful is dialogue. This is all due to me constantly talking to myself since I was a young girl which has developed the skill of being able to write an interesting dialogue scene. I have received many compliments from fellow authors and readers on my dialogue. If, you are struggling with coming up with good dialogue scenes I would suggest talking to yourself. Yes, you are going to look weird, but it is all worth it. Trust me.
One thing that I have learned during my writing journey is that having a unique voice is important. If you want to become successful then you have to stand out. Blending into the crowd and following what is popular will get you sales, yes, but if you want to become well known then you have to find your unique voice and find a way to stand out from amongst the rest.
The most impactful piece of information that I have learned is marketing. Though it is the most difficult thing in publishing, it is the most necessary. And to all my introverted authors out there, that sometimes mean you are going to have to get out of your comfort zone and put yourself out there. Social media is an extremely helpful tool for the readers of today’s time, but that is not the only source that will help you get your work out there. It is hard, but once you start to get the hang of it, the sales will start to come through.
One very important advice that I will give to my fellow authors that are beginning their journey is that you must be patient. I cannot stress that enough. Your sales are not going to come in just like that. You have to keep throwing your content in people’s faces, keep advertising and talking about it and you have to, and I mean you have to, listen to me, you HAVE to be patient. Do not give up. Getting out there in the arts world takes time. Sometimes even years. So, please please PLEASE be patient.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I am overwhelmed I take a break. During a writing journey it is good, in fact it is necessary, to take a break. From writing, editing, advertising, all of it. Because doing all of this on a daily on top of the other responsibilities can put a toll on you. You have to take a breather. Before I started my fourth book, I gave myself a month from writing. I just focused on advertising for my first three because I needed a breather to get my head clear.
