We recently connected with Asha Owens and have shared our conversation below.
Asha, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I believe my resilience comes from having a strong faith in God. Also, realizing that if I were to give up, all of my efforts and hard work would be in vain. So, I continue to persevere and live to fight another day.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a Singer & Song writer. I started singing at a very young age and I was inspired by my very talented (deceased) mother, Cheryl Smith. I began my singing journey in church. I later started singing at school and even won Miss. Choir. I would to be invited by individuals I knew to sing at weddings, church services and funerals. I continued my journey by joining a few singing groups in Dallas, Tx. I had my first big break when I sang at NFL player Keith Washington’s wedding and even had the opportunity to audition on American Idol. I continued on to sing with The Potters House Choir, to co-writing with Titus Glenn my very 1st single as a solo artist, titled “God Will Come Through.”
I am currently making the stride to start back as an active singer, due to being the Caregiver for my husband for last year and a half. Our new normal has been quite the challenge and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how my faith has been tested. However, witnessing my husband fight daily to overcome this life altering obstacle has given me an entire new prospective on life. I am extremely optimistic that God will get the glory in the end. Healing is on the way!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. The greatest qualities you can have is self-confidence, being as humble as possible, knowing exactly what you want and speaking up for yourself.
2.Be sure to develop your vocal skills by obtaining a vocal coach, also it’s good to practice on your skills daily.
3.Get familiar with like minded individuals that are more skilled than you, so that you can learn from them. Be open to developing your skill as well as building relationships.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
As a Caregiver to my husband it’s fairly easy to become over-whelmed, along with feeling defeated which is something that is not often discussed.
The advice that I can give is to pray and ask God for strength, also consider seeing a Life Coach or a Counselor. These professionals can provide you with the tools you need, to help you to navigate through the obstacles that you are facing.
Also, try some self-care by taking yourself to a movie, or even treating yourself to a massage and lunch date. Maybe take the long route home and just drive around the city or take a stroll in the park.
