We were lucky to catch up with Ashen Music recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashen, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
I’ve been fearless ever since the beginning. That doesn’t mean that I don’t experience fear though. I learn how to manipulate my fear the way it would manipulate me. Instead of playing “safe” I play big. The bigger you dream, the more you can lose. But how do you turn those losses into stepping stones? You stop feeling like you’ve lost. You stop telling yourself that. And you man up and keep going. That promise you made to yourself cannot be broken under ANY circumstance. YOU are the key. Self- belief is mightier than risk. Risk is a possibility. Self-belief is a knowing.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Growing up in Queens, NY in a Jamaican household, I was always captivated by music. From Hip Hop to Reggae, from R&B to Dancehall. It all surrounded me and found its way to the center of my heart. The purpose to create sound was instilled in me from young. I love to speak, read and even writing was a way for me to be loud. With a 2018 mixtape still buzzing around NYC, and multiple singles keeping me on my toes, I am do ready to release the fresh music I’ve been sitting on. I plan on showing off more of my choreo talent as a visual creator. I plan to recruit the best hidden dancers in NYC.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Intelligence. Confidence. Passion. Never think to yourself that it’s time to stop learning. There is always something you don’t know. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will. That’s a promise. As long as you genuinely enjoy doing something, it will never feel like a job. That fire in you will always be burning for more. And that’s a lovely thing! Books are not lame. Use them while using the internet to navigate new roads to knowledge. Look in the mirror and talk to yourself. Don’t be afraid to LOVE what you LOVE.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Self-reliance. Independence. Stronger faith and self-trust. Knowing and being truly rooted in the fact that I cannot fail. You can take everything away from me and I’ll actually come out better, contrary to what you expected. Literally nothing can stop me, I’m on the way up! Trust me. I tell no lie. I learned so much about my indestructibility. I’d love to share more details soon about this journey with my supporters. People need inspiration. They need to know that they are greater than they think they are. Bc that’s what I had to realize too.
