Meet Ashleigh Hasselbusch

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ashleigh Hasselbusch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ashleigh below.

Ashleigh, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I am constantly channeling my creative side, both in my personal and professional life. When I’m not working, you can likely find me tackling a renovation project in our home alongside my husband, Devon. We jokingly credit “YouTube University” for teaching us how to build things we’ve never attempted before, and when that fails, we call my Dad! Each year, we focus on transforming one specific room, and this year it’s the kitchen. I have a feeling this renovation may take a while, but it will absolutely be worth it. Even in our own projects, we start with a clear plan and adapt as creative changes inevitably arise along the way.

Professionally, I spend much of my time working through floor plans, looking for ways to maximize space and functionality within a building. I also find myself browsing paint colors and wallpapers for fun, planning future design schemes so that when someone requests something unique, I have ideas ready to go.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As I continue developing my brand, J&L Interiors, I’m always looking for new ways to grow and refine my side business. J&L Interiors focuses on bringing rooms within a home to life. I often find that clients want to personalize a specific space to better reflect who they are, they just aren’t sure where to begin. That’s where I step in: bringing ideas to the table and collaborating closely with them to create something meaningful.

My goal is for every room I design to feel memorable and intentional.

Most recently, I launched an updated single-room redesign package. It has already proven to be popular, as it offers an approachable way for clients to dip their toes into redesigning a particular area of their home without feeling overwhelmed.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For me, the most important foundation is learning the technical skills behind design. While there are countless resources available online today for gaining general knowledge, developing true technical ability is what builds confidence. That’s how I learned a proper sense of scale, and scale is everything. I can’t tell you how often clients fall in love with a piece of furniture that simply doesn’t fit the room properly. Understanding proportion and space planning is critical to creating a design that both looks good and functions well.

Secondly, when it comes to actually designing a space, don’t be afraid to explore multiple directions. I like to include a “wild card” option for my clients because sometimes they need a gentle push outside of their comfort zone to land on something truly memorable. It’s important to draw inspiration from talented designers, but the real question is: how can I make this my own? Not replicate, but reinterpret. That mindset is what sets J&L Interiors apart.

Marketing and communication skills are equally important. Marketing is something I’ve had to really educate myself in. Researching creative strategies and narrowing in on what you can realistically execute is key, especially in the early stages of building a brand. Strong communication is just as essential, you’re collaborating closely with your clients, so building trust and enjoying the process together makes all the difference!

I’d also add that the creativity involved in selecting fabrics, colors, and furnishings is something that comes naturally to me. I imagine that anyone drawn to interior design already has a creative instinct, lean into that. Don’t be afraid to challenge traditional design expectations. Trust your creative confidence, especially in moments of doubt.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, I am currently looking to build partnerships with skilled professionals who can help execute the construction side of my designs! My goal is to develop a trusted list of go-to contractors I can confidently refer my clients to.

As a new designer in the area, I’m actively building relationships with talented painters, wallpaper installers, tile specialists, and other trades who take pride in their work. If you have a skill set that would complement J&L Interiors and are interested in collaborating, I would love to connect.
