We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ashleigh Nixon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ashleigh below.
Ashleigh, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
My absolute favorite self-care practice is floating. I discovered it during a period of heartbreak, but it has transformed every day life. Floating, for those unfamiliar, is getting into a sensory deprivation water tank full of salt water. By shutting down all of the noise of my life, it provides a reset like none other. It has impacted my effectiveness by giving me a strong sense of calm that allows me to weather every issue that comes my way. More importantly, it gives me the clarity to think of new business ideas and remember ones that I had previously thought of, but got shuffled to the bottom of the pile inadvertently.
While practicing floating I also reflect on all of the ancestors, business owners and others that did not have the resources to take these breaks for themselves. Floating has instilled in me a level of gratitude for the opportunity to practice self-care. Gratitude and effectiveness go hand in hand for me. The more thankful I am, the more I am able to push through & push harder.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a florist who focuses primarily on teaching & floral marketing. Generally I can be found guiding a group through making floral arrangements at a private in home workshop, public ticketed workshop or assisted DIY wedding. The feeling I get at the end of seeing a client who told me they have no floral talent beaming over their arrangement is irreplaceable! Additionally, seeing the hands of beloved friends and family touching every single wedding flower to send their happy couple into their new life is next level.
With floral marketing I create eye-catching installations and activations for businesses. Anything to make an event or sale better with florals is what I do. This ranges from public workshops on slower nights, floral bouquets free with purchase, flower crown bars to long lasting faux floral designs on the external of the business.
Finally, I curate celebratory gifts that mix florals and floral confetti – two of my favorite things, These can be purchased from my website, Doordash/Grubhub locally and any number of artisan markets I participate in annually.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience, Confidence, Ingenuity.
Those came to me quickly, but after taking a few minutes to think about it more they are absolutely the correct words for my journey and any entrepreneur’s.
The best way to develop these is repetition. Have the confidence to ask, the resilience after the no, the ingenuity to find a new way to ask and ask again. If you are defeated at the first, second or 100th no… you won’t get anywhere. You have to ask again and again. This can be asking to be in a certain room, event or company. Asking yourself why you are in pursuit of a certain avenue and if that is still the direction you need to head in is also paramount..
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I want to do more work with brands! I love seeing brand products and logos built out of florals/natural materials. I have so many ideas! I am really hoping there are some cool food & drink companies, clothing, footwear & jewelry companies, retail shops, etc who want to make their brand and message come to life! I also live for local companies and want to draw attention to them through florals.. I want to make potential customers stop, take note of what is there and engage with them through social media tags of their decor and product.
Flowers send such a powerful message. Hit me up to be your interpreter!
