Meet Ashley Baca

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashley Baca a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Ashley, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Being a stand-up comic and actress is a journey filled with ups and downs. Just like in the book ‘The Courage to Be Disliked,’ I’ve learned a few valuable lessons that have helped me persist despite the haters and naysayers in my industry.

Courage to be disliked: I’ve embraced the courage to be disliked, understanding that not everyone will appreciate my humor or acting style. Just like Adler’s philosophy teaches in the book, it’s essential to stay true to myself and not seek approval from everyone.
No need for others’ validation: The book emphasizes that seeking validation from others can be limiting. In my career, I’ve learned that it’s more important to believe in my talent and the unique perspective I bring to the stage or screen. This confidence helps me push through criticism.
Taking criticism constructively: While I encounter critics and naysayers, I’ve learned to filter through their comments and take in constructive criticism. Adler’s principles highlight the importance of learning from feedback without letting it affect your self-worth.
Staying resilient: Just as Adler’s ideas suggest, resilience is key. I’ve faced tough audiences and challenging roles, but I’ve persevered, knowing that each experience makes me a better performer. It’s about adapting and growing in the face of adversity.
Turning negativity into comedy: As a stand-up comic, I’ve found humor in adversity, just as the book mentions finding joy in life’s challenges. I often incorporate the absurdity of haters and naysayers into my comedy, which not only diffuses negativity but also resonates with the audience.
In the world of entertainment, it’s crucial to have the courage to be yourself, accept criticism, and keep moving forward despite the haters. It’s all part of the journey, and with these lessons, I’ve been able to persist, grow, and thrive in this industry.”

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Over the past 15 years, I’ve dedicated myself to the world of entertainment. My journey has taken me through the realms of acting, writing, filmmaking, and stand-up comedy. What makes this journey so exciting and special is the diversity of experiences it has offered.

As an actor, I’ve had the opportunity to portray a wide range of characters in various theater productions and films. It’s a unique thrill to step into someone else’s shoes, to explore their emotions, and to tell their stories. This is where I find my true passion.

In addition to acting, I’ve ventured into writing and filmmaking. I’ve written and directed my own short films, bringing my creative visions to life on screen. This has allowed me to not only express my ideas but also connect with audiences in a different way.

On top of that, I’ve embarked on a journey as a stand-up comic. Touring all over the country with my comedy shows has been an incredible adventure. There’s something magical about standing on stage, making people laugh, and sharing in those moments of pure joy.

As for what’s new, I’m excited to share that I have some upcoming stand-up comedy tours and new film projects in the works. It’s all about continuing to evolve as a performer and storyteller, exploring new territories, and connecting with audiences on a deeper level.

Ultimately, my mission is to keep pushing the boundaries of creativity and making people laugh while also touching their hearts through the art of storytelling. I’m thrilled to see where this journey will take me next

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Reflecting on my journey, I’d say the three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have been crucial are:

Resilience: The entertainment industry can be challenging and unpredictable. Developing resilience to face setbacks, rejection, and criticism has been vital. My advice is to remember that failure is part of the journey. Learn from it, adapt, and keep going.
Authenticity: Being true to myself and my unique voice has set me apart in a crowded field. It’s important to develop your own style, perspective, and authenticity. Don’t try to emulate others too closely, as your uniqueness is your greatest asset.
Continuous Learning: The entertainment world is constantly evolving. Staying updated with the latest trends, techniques, and technologies is crucial. Invest in your education, attend workshops, and be open to new experiences. The more you learn, the more you can grow in your career.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to:

Be patient and persistent. Success doesn’t usually come overnight. Keep honing your craft and putting yourself out there.
Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors and peers who can provide guidance and encouragement.
Embrace failure and rejection as opportunities for growth. They are stepping stones toward success.
Stay true to your passion and purpose. It’s what will keep you motivated during the tough times.
Never stop learning. The more you know and the more skills you acquire, the more versatile and valuable you become in your field.
Remember, it’s a journey, and every step you take is a part of your growth and success story.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always eager to connect with individuals in the film industry who share a passion for storytelling and are dedicated to amplifying unheard voices. Collaborating with creative minds who are on a journey of growth and inspiration is something that truly excites me.
