Meet Ashley Dunn

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashley Dunn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Ashley , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

I recognized that imposter syndrome is a common experience, especially among women and women of color in industries where they are underrepresented. Naming it was the first step in addressing it. I realized I had to embrace my unique perspective, skill set, and cultural background as assets. I then began to understand my value and gave myself permission to be fully seen and heard! I deserved to be in rooms and spaces even if I was the only one who looked like me or even if I felt unsure. I was there for a reason and purpose. When I began to honor my journey and my lived experiences I started to show up differently. In overcoming imposter syndrome I discovered my voice, and that even if I had to do it scared that too was okay! So as long as showed up and did the thing as my most authentic self.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Yes, I’m a seasoned TV producer, presenter, on-air talent, style expert and podcast host. I bring over a decade of experience with me in the television, digital and fashion space. During my 13 years in Houston, I started out as a personal stylist, I then styled for modeling and casting agencies which then established myself as a style expert and host, collaborating with top networks to produce and present over 1,000 fashion lifestyle and entertainment segments.

In 2018, I relocated to Los Angeles and shifted my focus to entertainment and pop culture. Since then, I’ve covered numerous red carpets and interviewed top talent including Viola Davis, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah, Samuel L. Jackson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Quinta Brunson, Kerry Washington, and Ben Affleck. I have covered numerous press junkets and major awards shows such as the Billboard Music Awards, BET Awards, MTV Movie & TV Awards, NAACP Image Awards, Emmys, and Critics’ Choice Awards. Additionally, I’ve moderated and hosted countless industry panels.

Previously, I worked as a producer for “The Real” daytime talk show, where I produced celebrity interviews, human interest stories, and games. My dual experience in front of and behind the camera has allowed me to connect deeply with my subjects, telling compelling stories that drive, champion, and inspire.

What I love most about my job—whether on my podcast, behind the camera producing, or interviewing on the red carpet or at a press junket—is engaging with unique and interesting individuals. I am passionate about sharing their stories to educate, entertain, inspire, and influence my audience and beyond.

My journey has not been easy; I’ve endured and sacrificed a great deal to pursue my dreams, and much like many others. This is why I titled my podcast “UnDUNN,” because I’m always interested in the in-between moments. What did you do when life became “undone”? How did you pivot and bounce back? Those are the stories I love to hear, because isn’t that the journey we’re all on? No matter the industry or the circumstance, everyone faces the choice to sink, swim, or find another way. That’s what I enjoy most—listening, learning, and sharing these stories in whatever capacity I’m in.

I am a proud HBCU alumna of Prairie View A&M University.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three skills that have been most impactful in my journey are being a good listener, researcher, and lastly having resilience. There is definitely more to this list, like having a vision for what you want to do, even if you have to take detours to get there being clear on what you want is important. You need to be able to see yourself in the thing you want before it happens, this helps you in your journey, during those dark moments or times when your dreams or goals seem unattainable. If you can see it, you can be it. I would encourage people on their journey to lock in and be committed to their dreams/goals even if it seems like it’s taking a long time to happen. Always be a student of the craft, you should constantly work on ways to improve your skills, even when you land the big job/opportunity always be hungry and willing to learn and grow. And lastly don’t compare your journey to someone else, you don’t know the price they paid to get what they have. Just focus on your journey, do the work, network, and never be afraid to ask for what you want, as many times as you have to. You will eventually land your YES!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I feel overwhelmed, I take a step back and prioritize self-care. I start by acknowledging my feelings and giving myself permission to feel and take a break.

At some point, I create a list breaking down what I should prioritize into manageable chunks. This helps me focus on one thing at a time and reduces the sense of being overwhelmed. Additionally, I pray and then reach out to my support network of family, friends, and mentors for advice and encouragement.

Engaging in activities that I enjoy, such as, listening to music, watching my favorite show, or spending time with loved ones, also helps me recharge and regain perspective. Finally, I remind myself of past challenges I’ve overcome, which gives me the boost I need and reassures me that I can handle the current situation and whatever curveball life throws.

When you feel overwhelmed, take the time you need to feel your feels and then refocus your energy on working through the problem. Call in help if you need to, because you don’t have to do it alone. And most importantly realize that this too, shall pass. You will get through it!
