We were lucky to catch up with Ashley Hemmings recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
For a long time, I wanted to be animator. A cartoonist and a 3d animator. After leaving the navy I attended college, the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale which no longer exists. After getting my bachelor’s degree in media arts and animation. I sought an entry level position in my field of study to earn experience. But finding work in Florida for animators, especially South Florida is not easy.
After a long time, I found a position as a Graphic Designer. But after working for one year and a month. The art department which I worked for was cut. I was let go. Afterwards, I felt I had wasted a portion of my life seeking a job in my field only to be kicked out because the company wanted to save money.
At this time, I met Sara Rogers an acting coach who was teaching at ArtServe. I used to work at ArtServe part time. She told me I could be an actor. All I needed to do was learn the skills, practice, get a headshot, resume, and agent. I took her advice and never looked back. I love acting, and I want to do it all the time if I can.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Now, I’ve been acting for under a decade now. I have gained a lot of experience in the entertainment industry. But acting is not all I do. I am also an author and have created a few stories. I have a Patreon site. I am also doing the narration for my own book using voice over equipment.
I would say acting is my first love and writing my second love. Then I discovered voice acting and am now pursuing a voice career. I’ve created my own home studio and have sought work as a voice actor.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Before a started acting, I took acting classes. I also took classes about the business of the film industry. More importantly, I learned about the business and agencies.
My advice to you is if you want to do something that requires skills and knowledge. Learn about your craft from professionals. That is what I did.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I have a number of people to thank for helping me build and develop my acting skills. Sara Rogers has been a great teacher and inspiration. But she is not the only one. I also learned from Sarahi Diaz and Holly Caputo. Kahra Keyes was also a great inspiration to me. She too is an actress/singer/artist.
